So this is my first ever thread here im going to try and keep it short. I was accepted to the Naval Academy Summer Seminar today and it gave me a bit of hope moving forward. My stats are as follows:
GPA/unweighted- 3.3 should graduate with about 3.5 (yikes, I know)
ACT-should be write around the 29-31 range based on my PLAN
Rank: school doesn’t rank, probably top 20% most likely.
State- Illinois
income bracket-100,000+
My EC’s are as follows-
3 sport varsity athlete
Student government member
Student ambassador
Student ambassador officer
150+ service hours
Part time job
Very high chance of being student body president
Honor roll every semester
(Lots more, don’t feel like listing everything)
Recs: My Recs from teachers and counsellors will be good, and can probably get some from local politicians too because I live in a fairly political area
While I know the naval academy is very difficult to get into, I live in a district that is severely under represented and i have heard of kids with far worse stats Getting nominated. I believe that only 12 kids applied for nominations to service academies from my congressman last year. While you’re at it feel free to chance me for the following:
UIUC
Miami (OH)
Clemson
Ohio state
Tulane
Marquette
Indiana
(Please don’t be too brutal, will chance back)
If you are from a Congressional District with not a lot of applicants, the schools shouldn’t be that tough, so that GPA is probably not what the Naval Academy would be looking for. The other schools may be in range.
As you know, getting into the Naval Academy is extremely difficult. Your GPA is pretty low, and your ACT goal is not high either. On the other hand, your extra curriculars (especially varsity sports, if you are really good) could pull you through. Just don’t count on it.
I recommend that you plan to take both the SAT and ACT – twice each!
You should get into most of those other universities, except Tulane is a reach.
On of my colleagues at work is an Annapolis grad and a Blue and Gold officer in Illinois. I’ll ask him what he thinks of your stats. Normally an academy candidate would be a varsity athlete. Your ACT score is fine. The fact that you received a spot at the summer leadership session is very positive. I would consider going to your congressman’s office and meeting with whichever staff member handles academy appointments to get your file started. Class rank of top 20 percent might be good enough. Your GPA is low - are you an under represented minority? That would help a lot. Consider the other military academies and other nominating authorities. A given congressman can nominate 10 candidates but they can only have five cadets at any academy at any time. Your congressman may have a lot of spots or none at Annapolis. The nominating committee won’t hold it against you if you apply to West Point and the USAFA as well
Based on your list of universities, it looks like maybe you are applying for the NROTC scholarship too (and if not, you should). I would caution you about aiming too high for elite type colleges. You might, for example, get your NROTC scholarship assigned to Tulane but then get rejected by Tulane. Then you have to go back into the bottom of the list for assignment to an NROTC college and many of the most popular schools will have their quotas filled. This happened last year to a fellow who wanted to attend Berkeley. He was rejected, and the Navy offered him Rutgers which he turned down. Then his parents paid nearly full tuition to a private university.
Also, if you have any interest in a small college, take a look at Rhodes College in Memphis. They will have NROTC for the first time this fall, and provide free room and board to all ROTC scholarship students.
@NROTCgrad @ Wje9164be thank you both very much! I will definitely be applying for West Point and Air Force also and I am also seriously considering ROTC.
West Point/Air Force/Navy: low/mid reach (if only because a lot of seniors apply to all)
Most of the colleges you listed are matches.
I’d call Tulane a low reach as well.
University of Miami (OH) is a high match.
I can guarantee your admission to every university except for Tulane. However you can get in with a 3.5 GPA as long as your ACT is 33+. It becomes more iffy because of your GPA if you have less than 32.
The naval academy is a reach unless you can somehow make your GPA 3.70+. I personally know someone with a 3.7 GPA and 33 ACT who was accepted to the Naval Academy and will most likely attend.
