You are a cashier at Wal-mart, so I'm guessing your family isn't extremely well off. Don't ED at JHU wthout an idea of how much aid you are going to get if that is the case.

To 1MX:

:D nah, the walmart job was only for a little while, and only because my parents wanted me to get a taste of blue collar life (yeah, maybe stupid i know, but i did see a lot of things that i probably wouldn't have otherwise)...so money isn't really an issue here. I think we will be ok with some loans and whatnot since we're basically your normal middle class (150k per year?) family.

To Stanfordkid: We had about 3 get into WashU this year, I don't know about NW...one guy did go a couple of years back. But basically each year around 10-20 kids get into pretty good schools I'd estimate.

No, it was a great idea. It will be invaluable later in life. Best thing I ever did was working for minimum wage at an automotive plant freshman summer.

As pdef has said, making your essay sound as "un-asian" as possible is going to be pretty important ... especially for the University of Chicago app.

The UofC sees a lot of applicants with excellent GPAs and scores (and has a slight preference for Chicago kids). I know for a fact that they have essay questions that are "out there" so if you can really wow them with your essay, your chances of getting in will be improved.

Hmm...your application could go either way. You have very good qualifications all around, but, seeing as you're Asian, it may be a little more difficult. Having a strong SAT score goes nowhere for Asians (I feel you bro) and that below average rank does hurt you. Most people at the top schools rest in at least the top 5% of their high schools...just browse a couple Common Data Sets. However, if you can write a brilliant essay and get good recommendations, you should have as much a chance as anyone else.

Johns Hopkins (#1 choice, will ED here) - 60% (depends on the major though)
Washington Univ. St. Louis - 70% (they want high SAT scores)
Univ. of Pennsylvania - 30%
Northwestern Univ - 60%
UC Berkeley - 40% (Out of state)
Univ. of Southern California - 80%
Univ. of Chicago - 60%
Duke - 40%
Columbia - 20%
Cornell - 30%
Purdue (Safety school) - 99% (Just don't drop out of high school)
Stanford - 10%
Emory - 60%
Yale - 7%
Brown University - 25%

Might you chance me too? :D

your in Hopkins ED unless you really mess up your essays or apply for BME. Major doesn't factor into admissions at Hopkins unless you apply for BME

i think that your ecs are unique. esp. the senior connect thing

i cant say that im much use in these things since im just gonna be a junior in high school, but my opinion is that JHU for you would be a sure thing, especially w/ ED like i think im gonna do.

taking AP in freshman yr? wow, my school doesnt allow you to do that. but it is impressive

UPenn-reach for most ppl but an excellent essay and recs could do it

i think you have a great chance into making it into all of these schools, UPenn, Stanford, and Yale will definately be the most difficult to get into. From what i've heard about JHU, you should be a shoo in?
Coincidentally I live in maryland and JHU is rather close to me, is there any particular reason that you chose it besides its med school?

Well I originally really liked JHU because I thought the campus was rather nice; east coast, close to DC...that, and the school is nice too :D

But now I'm thinking of maybe considering other places for ED too, like WashU or maybe Duke/UPenn...still got a few months to make up my mind though

=), good chance >50% for all.

You'll get into JHU ED most likely. Yale and Stanford are most likely out of your reach. Don't bother applying to the UC's honestly. The other schools are reaches but attainable.

it's been said before, but you could improve your chances of getting in at JHU if you apply undeclared. JHU's BME program is one of the most competitive in the country. Although, seeing as how you plan on going pre-med, it'll still be insanely hard AFTER you get in with all those other top kids in all your pre-med req classes! good luck
