Hi everyone! This is my first time using CollegeConfidential as a user.
I am very interested in Tufts University, perhaps as my ED.
So, CHANCE MEEEE. Also, I would like to hear suggestions or recommendations..
(I am also interested in BC, JHU and

These are my scores:

Two Presidental Award for volunteering (Gold Medal) -given by the white house

Your test scores are obviously very solid, but can you tell us more?
First, can you give more information about your high school (geography, size, level of difficulty) and your curriculum (how hard are your courses relative to the hardest available at the school)? Also, give an UNweighted GPA (consisting of only academic subjects; no phys ed, art, etc.)

You don’t need to take more SAT2’s you have plenty already. It’s a waste of time and money to take more. Don’t feed the College Board. Your scores are more than fine.

Your grades are probably fine - though I agree it would be interesting to know what the unweighted GPA is for just your academic courses and how many AP/college level courses you have taken. Tufts expects you to have challenged yourself.

Tufts admissions is holistic, so it’s really going to come down to your essays and recommendations. I believe that’s what really made the difference for my son who was accepted last year.

As for other suggestions it really depends on what you like about Tufts. There are tons of midsize research universities in or near cities. Ones my son looked at and/or applied to: U. of Chicago (he almost went to Chicago - it was a very tough decision), Harvard, Brown, U Penn, Georgetown, GW, American, Brandeis, Syracuse (much bigger), Vassar (smaller and LAC), William and Mary. If he’d been willing to go south Vanderbilt, Rice and Emory might have been contenders. Out west he might have looked at the Claremont consortium.

Hi thank you so much for writing back especially from people who have gone through this tough experience.
I love to write and really my life has been a one stormy novel so I have a lot of things to write about. For my common essay I think I’ll be writing about the most important, heroic and inspirational person in my life; mom. And I think my essay will be good enough…

Not to just blurt out other colleges but do youthink I’m good enough for Columbia University? I mean, their acceptance rate is at its lowest but I still want to see if I am qualified. (Also, UPenn!)

So more about me.
I am Korean American living in New Jersey. I go to one of the best public schools in Bergen County. My school is known for its rigorous curricculum with AP classes and such.
I have gotten a 5 on my AP Chemistry Exam and next year I’m planning to take
AP Biology, AP World History, AP AB Calc, AP Statistics, and AP Literature. (Honors Orchestra)

-I have gone to a missionary work out to South America this summer for a week.
-I have gotten a grant (basically $$$) for a non-profit organization which deals with mental health, family health, and youth development.

So, if you don’t mind…(I know this is the wrong place to ask about Columbia or UPenn) but can you chance me for that too?

So far, I believe you are a good match for Tufts however Penn and Columbia will be reaches for you, based on your current SAT scores. Obviously, knowing your GPA through your junior year would help make these determinations even more accurate. You may want to apply to Boston College EA and see if you are awarded one of their Presidential Awards. Good luck!

Thank you so much!
Yes they will be my reaches so I’m thinking about applying as ED for one of them.
And I actually am applying to BC EA!
thankyouthankyou

Be careful writing your essay about your mom. Remember that the goal of the essay is for Tufts to learn about you. Your mom is not applying. If you do choose to write about her make sure you do it in a way that communicates who you are.

Chance threads are silly. Channel the angst and effort that goes into worrying about your chances into improving your application. The only reason for a chance thread is to correct a student who has radically wrong notions about where they should be applying, like someone with a C average applying to Tufts or someone with a 2400 SAT score not bothering to apply to any good schools. You’re clearly in the running for the schools you’re considering, so there’s no sense fretting over whether you’ve got a 55% or a 58% chance of getting in, especially when the people you’re asking are really just guessing themselves.

Best of luck, and as has been mentioned, it comes down to your essays and recs. Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite, and if it’s not working don’t be afraid to start over. I started my personal statement a year in advance and wrote about a half dozen radically different pieces before finally settling on a short script for an experimental-ish pseudo-autobiographical stage play.
