Chance me please? -Freshmen Class of 2015.

Hi. I was wondering if you can help me with my high school schedule and advise me what and what not to take. I want to be a science or a medical major and this is what I'm taking/want to take. We are forecasting for next year and I don't know what I should take.

9th grade (Currently)-

AVID (College prep class)
Orchestra
Physics
Honors English
Health/Bodywise. (Bodywise is P.E class)
and Intergrated 3. (Jr. math)

10th grade-

AP World History
AP Psychology
Honors English (Zero Period)
Honors Biology
Honors Chemistry
Spanish 3+4 *I will be taking Spanish 1+2 over the summer as a online credit
and Precal.

11th grade-

AP Biology
Human Anatomy and Phys.
AP U.S History
AP Calculus AB
AP English
Spanish 5+6

12th grade-

AP Chemistry
AP Government and Politics
AP Calculus BC
AP Spanish (Spanish 7+8)
AP Environmental Science
AP English. (I believe it is AP Lite and Comp..?)

I know taking all of these APs isn't realistic, but I do know that I will experience one to see how hard it is.

I do have a 4.0 GPA and a cumulative 4.0 GPA as well.

To me to quit orchestra, how will that impact me rather then going to harder academic classes?

For sports, I am not doing anything this year, not sure how that will affect me.....But I am doing Track and Tennis for all of the 3 years. I can get P.E credit for doing a sport.

For Volunteering, I am volunteering at 2 different schools and I am volunteering at a hospital. So far I have 130+ hours set in. I am also working at my dad's restaurant that I can add hours to for that also.

For clubs I am in Key Club (Like a volunteering club) and Knowledge Bowl. Hopefully, I can get into Science club next year as well.

I have not taking the SAT's yet but I eventually will in Jr year.

As far as I'm going into, I am looking into University of Washington or somewhere in Portland. However, if I get far enough.....I will apply to Stanford University...?

Thank you for your help and time.

University of Washington could easily be a safety if you do phenomenal on your SATs and keep your grades up. Stanford will always be a reach, even with a 2400 SAT, but you will be highly competitive for many of the mid-tier universities below rank 10

My advice for you: don’t just volunteer to volunteer. Do something that you love to do, and the same with clubs. Also, I wouldn’t be on this site until Junior year, where you’ll really need the advice.

Start studying for your SATs now…biggest mistake of my life was that I had 1 month to prep my junior year, because you’ll be too caught up in everything else.
I got lucky with my score, and I don’t intend on ever taking that crappy test again :P

Everything you are taking looks fine, just be able to balance out everything. Remember, you also have a life.

Some tips for you on taking the SAT’s is start memorizing a new word each day, and knowing it’s definition. It will help you a lot plus it will expand your vocabulary. You should take the PSATs, in order to get a feel for what you will take on the SATs.

Its what you want to stand out that really matters on the college you apply for. If you quit orchestra, you want the college to look at something else of your record. If you stay in orchestra you basically want the college to look at your fine arts.

Not doing a sport this year, shouldn’t effect you that much since you are planning a rigorous course ahead of you. It’s good to volunteer as a freshman, it adds plenty of hours. However, from what I have learned, in order to succeed you must do something you love. When you do something you don’t enjoy, basically you get not as far.

When applying for an elite university, sometimes it isn’t all about academics, or sports, or clubs or volunteering, but it’s about who you are. Being well-rounded is my best advice for you. Experience different things, not just stay in one spot.

I hope you get into the university you want to apply for. Good luck!

Yes! Thank you! I am looking forward to going to University of Washington. However, do you know what I would need to do in order to stand in front of Stanford’s eyes?

“Also, I wouldn’t be on this site until Junior year, where you’ll really need the advice.”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Please enjoy your freshman year! Yes, I wish I had studied for the SAT before Junior Year, but don’t worry about college yet! I didn’t start worrying about college until the second half of sophomore year, and that was bad enough. Worrying about college saps energy, and makes you do things for the wrong reasons. So just enjoy Freshman Year, do well, and memorize a new word per day if you wish, just don’t kill yourself-- it really isn’t worth it. :)

As for standing out to Stanford: ESSAYS and EXTRA CURRICULARS are your two weapons. Both of these things can either distinguish you or make you appear boring and/or not passionate, both of which are obviously not redeeming qualities that colleges look for. But again, enjoy your Freshman Year. Adjust to high school.
