I didn't do so well (a couple of B's, a single C in H Alg 2 freshman year 1st semester, almost all honors, had to drop honors math in sophomore year due to a scheduling issue) in my Freshman 2nd semester and Sophomore 1st semester, but it was a growth experience and I could explain it if I had the opportunity. Plus I expect at most 1 B from the rest of the Junior and Senior years.

COLLEGE COURSES

Junior Year, Spring:
Linear Algebra -- MATH 60
General Physics with Laboratory -- PHYS 41
Advanced Introductory Astronomy -- ASTRO 51

Senior Year, Fall:
PHYS 101
ASTRO 101
Possibly two (definitely one) of the following: Quantum Physics, any other ASTRO course, or Vector Calculus.

Senior Year, Spring:
More advanced Astrophysics
More advanced Physics
More advanced Math

I'll basically have completed all the Astronomy courses which Pomona college offers, and may take some Physics and Math at Harvey Mudd as it's nearby.

Without testing out of any GE's, I'll be about 1 year away from a major in Physics with a minor in Astronomy.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I could get great recommendations from my counselor, math teacher and physics teachers.

E.C./SUBJECTIVE

National Association of Rocketry Member and Founder/President of the NAR Chapter in my hometown.

NAR US Record holder for altitude in a specific diameter of rocket motor.

Participated in the following competitions and was captain/founder of the team that participated in them:
JPL Tissue Toss, NASA Space Colonization Challenge (individual), NASA Lunar Plant Growth Chamber Challenge, NASA RealWorld Challenge, USA Math Talent Search

NARTREK (Rocket certification by NAR) certification Gold (highest) level

Solar Cup (building boats and racing, engineering challenge by water district)

Robotics (teaching experience while in HS, competition in elementary and middle, founding member and have participated and won many times since 6th grade)

University of Michigan Math Competition

Science Olympiad -- Astronomy

Almost black belt in Shotokan Karate

Speech and Debate since beginning of highschool

Math and Science Club, Math Olympiad, Physics and Engineering Club since beginning of highschool.

POSSIBLE

Neurological/socio-psychological research using EEG apparatuses and joint publication with a PhD at Pomona or Pitzer college. Could use as an ISEF/Siemmens project, as the goal is to help medical practitioners aid the mentally ill, those in emergency conditions in which there is no time to perform exact preemptive tests and the traumatically stressed.

Successfully petitioned for my school to transfer to block schedule.

Literature publication (one classical, one experimental, science fiction and possibly one or more poems and academic philosophical papers)

Art shown or competitions won (impressionistic, modern)

French publication on Astronomy

Discoverer of comet (will be named something like SOHO-61432 due to the telescope used to record the images I am scouring)

Internship at NASA Glenn Center

Merit Scholar, IB/AP Scholar, etc.

ESSAY/CHARACTER SUMMARY

My growth essay would be about how, when I broke my arm in 6th grade, the doctor who set my arm performed malpractice in that he not only slightly misshaped my arm, but also severed the nerve in it. My left arm -- I'm right-handed -- has a long, white scar and the back of my right leg has a long scar due to a nerve transplant performed too late. I went through many doctors and medical practices, none of them working until the surgery. I relearned how to walk, how to use my hand and, thanks only to the surgery, have partial feeling but no deaf numbness in my left hand and my right foot today. I would then talk about how this has gone to profoundly shape my character, which it truly has.

Also, Pomona college should give it away but I’m a California resident and was born here, have some great memories of Big Bear that I would write about (California pride, how I’ve always looked up to UCB) for my UCB supplemental essay.

No one? I really need help, and have basically no idea what I’m doing regarding colleges.

Oh, almost forgot, I’m the founding VP of a “Write to Africa” program. We write to highschool age students in Africa and develop a relationship with a penpal.

I’m sorry but there are people with much bigger issues than you my friend. Sit down, have a drink, get that 2200 SAT and you’ll be cruisin.

Ah, thanks. I’m just so nervous about the whole process – it’s stressful never knowing if you’re ever truly good enough. Perhaps I should relax. Thank you.

Just a question, are u a senior?
And you participated in IMO?

I’m neither a senior nor have I participated in IMO. The Math Olympiad is a club at my school. We sometimes take the AMC, but I’m more focused on the USAMTS.

Do I appear to be spread too thin? What are my actual chances of getting into these colleges? What else should I do or drop? Is my GPA too low and do colleges count summer school courses in calculations of W or UW GPA?

I appreciate the reassurance, but I’d still like to know what my chances are without any of the “possible” achievements occurring as opposed to with them occurring.

You might get into Cornell and UCB.
Other colleges on your list… Hmmmm

Is that a “hmmm” as in, uncertain? Or is it a “hmmm” as in, I’m not getting in?

Also, what would you statistically represent my chances of Cornell and Berkeley as? Over 50%?

What could I do to improve my chances at HPS?

WAIT. You seem like a perfect candidate for the Summer Science Program, which I was so lucky to be a part of this summer! Looking at your interests, it seems perfect for you. Look into it please!!! You’ll have the best summer of your life next year if you’re still a junior now :)

Also, 20more is like this to everybody, so I wouldn’t listen to him too much

I’m serious. They would LOVE you. And you would love it. www.summerscience.org

Wow, what a coincidence! My dad showed me this program and asked me if I was interested and I definitely am! What was it like? What courses did you take?

Well the thing is, there aren’t “courses”, per se, but you get lectured (very much in depth) on astronomy, physics, a bit of calculus, and there’s a whole lot of programming too. The work is very rigorous, but it’s also the most fun you’ll ever have doing homework until 2 in the morning with a group of super bright peers. Send me a private message and I’ll tell you more!

I think your chance is over 50% in all the schools you’re applying to.

As a ‘normal student’, let me say you have NOTHING to worry about. For christs sake, calm down, you’re record is awesome.

Anyone else? I’ve been getting very mixed messages.

I know that I might be able to compete, but I’m wondering to what degree. Basically I’m in love with UCB, Harvard, Stanford and Cornell. There are a lot of other small schools that I like but I’m sure I can probably get into those smaller schools. I’m not just shooting for the Ivies just to shoot for the Ivies, I want to go to these specific colleges. Any advice/app criticism/chancing?
