Chance me please? (RD)

Hi...

I am in public high school. It is not very competitve...

My ethnicity is Asian (Japanese). I have 103 in TOEFL (actually, do I have to ever submitt it? I am a permanent resident)

Rank is little tricky... My school picked only 8 best grades... and I am 11 out of 216. If they considered ALL grades, I should be 3. (F***)

Course load is SOMEWHAT regorous... It is not very in Freshman year (no honors), gets little bit more in sophomore (1 honors), gets little more in junior (3 honors), and now senior, very (4 honors, 1 AP). We take 8 courses in each year.

I have taken 6 APs (Calc BC, Chem, Phy. B, Phy. C Mech and Mag., and Stat.) ALL SELF STUDIED... (2 in Soph. year, 4 in Junior year). Got all 5 except in Stat. (got 4)

My GPA is 4 (unweighted), and will be about 4.1~4.2 if weighted. In fact, my school uses 100-scale GPA, and I have 98 (weighted)

SAT2s (I am going to take 3-SAT2s option)

800 Math. 2
800 Physics
790 Chem.

ECs

Art Club 9, 10, 11, 12
Math Team 10, 11, 12
National Honor Soc. 11, 12
Volunteer in nursing home 300 hours +
Personal research (3 research papers... should I submitt them?)

Awards

League high scorer in math team 11
Rensselaer medal award 11
Outstanding science sophomore 10
Outstanding math junior 11
AP scholar with distinction 11

Recs are AWESOME, and essay is fine - good.

I am going to major in Math or Physics (NOT ENGINEERING)

Chance me please!!!

AND HAVE A NICE THANKSGIVING!

Similiar situation
Chinese
TOEFL 107
800 Maths2, 800 physics, 800 chemistry
low in reasoning test so i would submit SAT subjects.
Waiting for chance too

Why do you want Midd? Seems like CMU or MIT would be better suited to your abilities. Nothing personal, but if you don’t write well, you will not get great grades. And you have to take a large number of courses that require writing ability. Why not an engineering school?

Although my strength is in math and science, not interested in engineering I am. What I love to pursue is PURE math and science. For that matter, I am more interested in liberal arts colleges than institutes of techs like MIT or CMU.

My SAT score is about 2000 which is less than the average of most of top schools, but my SAT2 scores, as you can see, are not so bad. Middlebury is, as far as I know, is the only school that takes 3 SAT2 scores for adm., and that is the reason I am applying there.

I presume that there are certain factors going to work against me if I choose that option, and that is why I posted this thread: to know my chances.

As for the writing, this may sound little arrogant, but my writing ability is somewhat better than my reading ability. I am still trying to enhance both qualities, and I think I do see the progress.

Again, thanks for your kindly advice, but I would much appreciate if you provided me with the answer to my original question. =)

If you can and are willing to, please introduce me some schools that use the similar policy to Middlebury’s.

Thanks again, and have a good night!

¡harvey mudd!

Colby College uses the same testing policy that Middlebury does. An admissions officer at Colby introduced it to me as “the Middlebury method” - SAT Reasoning/ACT/3 SAT Subject Tests. I don’t know of any other schools that have the same policy, but there might be others.

I’m a fellow 2015er and won’t chance you because I have as much information as you do… but… M doesn’t seem like a good fit… And you probably definitely shouldn’t apply to a school JUST because of their testing policies. Keep in mind… even if your writing is better than your reading ability… you will most likely be writing ABOUT what you’re reading…

You seem like a bright kid with schwarzenegger strength in the maths and sciences. I fuggin LOVE Middlebury, and will go as far to say that M is perfect in every sense of the word and if you want to do PURE MATH and PURE PHYZIX, the professors will be more than happy to help you… but… I wonder how many like minded people you will find there… Your SAT2s are beautiful. If you got a 2000 I’m guessing you got an 800 in Math, 580 in CR, 620 W? While you’d be a much better position if you had a 2400, colleges will see that you have accomplished a lot in the sciences and maths, and have the potential to do more. Some people aren’t cut out to be writers or philosophers. That’s okay. I think you’d read well at a big research university. But give Harvey Mudd a shot. Bowdoin is testing optional and I’m pretty sure you can submit 3 subject tests, but you’re still going to have to do a fat chunk or reading and writing.

My two cents.

Either way, 幸運 jnj0925-ちゃん!

P.P.S. TAKE THE ACT! It’s 2/3 Math/Science!

And… I hate to be a buttball, but I’d submit the TOEFLS… I mean… I don’t actually know what is considered a good TOEFL score, but if you’ve recently moved here, it’ll help justify your weakness in reading/writing English. (I HOPE I DIDN’T OFFEND YOU!)

To answer your original question, it seems like you should have a very good chance with those stats. There are lots of science types at Midd, so although I agree that if you are obsessed with math and physics you might want to think about the other schools mentioned, I don’t want to dissuade you if you truly like Midd beyond its admissions policies.

Aslong as you took the hardest classes you could in highschool, I don’t see why using one of the application options would hurt you and you have a strong application so I would say your chances are very good. Get some help on your essay if you don’t think it’s all that great but it shouldn’t be the deciding factor in your application

I would chance you high with Midd. All the best.
B

Grades are very good, SAT II scores are excellent. Be sure to send in all of your AP scores (very impressive that you self-studied for all of those!) and have someone proofread your entire application. Good luck!

Just being realistic, don’t mean to upset anyone-
I agree with hohum-typos and poor grammar on your app could sink you. If all your recs say are that you are a brilliant mathematician, that may not help overcome the concern about your reading/writing skills. I honestly think you might have a better chance at MIT or even Princeton, because they are looking for brilliant math boys, and may be more willing to overlook the English piece.
Harvey Mudd also is an inspired choice, and you can take courses at Pomona etc if the fit takes you.
My thought is that Midd is looking for more well-rounded geniuses- I could be wrong-and while I hope you attain your heart’s desire, you need a back-up plan and some of these other suggestions might work out better for you.
Please keep us posted, as I will be interested to see if you are accepted. This will affect my advise to future posters.

I greatly appreciate all of your kindly responses, and I promise that I will keep those in my mind as I decide things.

Yes, I know that my poor English ability will put me in a hard spot as I go through my college education if I go to Middlebury or some other liberal arts colleges such as Bowdoin or Colby. As some of you might concern, it is true that I certainly am not a well-rounded student; I am more of a pointy one so to speak.

MIT, Caltech, Harvey Mudd. They are also in my list of colleges. My only (or one out of many) concern is that my standardized test scores (in this case, they are SAT 1 and ACT. I got 2000(600/760/660) and 30(30/36/24/30)) are little too low to have a good shot at those schools. Nevertheless, I will take your advices and will apply. After all, what have I got to lose? (some dollars and time =))

Aww, GOOD LUCK KIDDO! Also, it’s a little unbelievable (in a good way!) that all of those APs were self taught. Colleges will definitely see that you have a thirst for knowledge. A liberal arts education (in my humble opinion) is about EXPANDING your mind, and dipping your paintbrush into every color, but the world needs pointy people too, haha. LACs seem to value people with PASSIONS, and it’s pretty obvious that you’re passionate about maths and sciences. Hmm… you did really well on Math 2s, but surprisingly not as well on SAT1 Math… I’d chalk it up to the weird word problems. Midd’s an AHMAAAAYZANG school and you’ve got a good shot, I’d say, but definitely apply to MIT, Caltech, and Harvey Mudd. Don’t quote me, but I think they’re made for pointy people. GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING! :D
