Chance me please? Will chance back!

I am a girl going into my junior year in high school. I’d really like to go to Yale. What should I do to better my application.

Unweighted GPA: 3.93
Rank: 9 out of 380
(I probably would be higher, but my freshman year was a little shaky. But since I’m doing better, I’ll probably rise)
I haven’t taken the SAT yet, but I hope to get over a 2200, though my actual goal is a 2400. My first unprepared practice this summer was a 1960.

I took AP World History and got a 3, unfortunately.

Throughout high school, I plan to take AP: Calculus, US History, French, Biology or Chemistry, English 3, English 4, Government, Economics, Psychology, and Music Theory.

I take Honors/Pre-AP classes whenever available.

EC’s:
President of French Club
French National Honor Society
National Honor Society
Student Council
A program where upperclassmen go to underclassmen dens and take a “leadership” role there
Varsity Tennis
Played piano for eleven years (But only taken lessons for eight of those)
Taken drum lessons for three years
Have a part-time job at my church as a child-care worker
Am shadowing a doctor (40 hours)
I plan to join HOSA, as I decided I would like to be a doctor, and the Academic Team. I realize I should have joined these earlier, but I recently revised my priorities. I’m also starting photography.

Volunteer Work:
A camp where we fix houses for those in need.
Bible School
A mission group at my church
A program for kids, in my church (for part of freshman year)
I’ll try to get more. I"m going to try and volunteer at a hospital.

Awards: (I don’t have many)
Tennis Freshman Girls Singles District Champ (I might have been JV this year, but I tore my ACL)
I have had perfect attendance nine years of my life.
I was also nominated for the Chemistry Pre-AP Award, but I didn’t win.
I’m in the G&T program.
I’m going to try for NMS
I compete in French Symposium every year, and hope to win an award this year. I also may win an award in Academic Team.

I don’t know if this makes a difference but I am a black female. I was born in England and moved here when I was about five. My dad says that it might hurt me, because I wasn’t born in the US, but I don’t know.

I know this is quite long, but if you could give me advice on how to stand out and better my application, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

P.S. Could you tell me what you think of my chances for other Ivies as well?

ALSO…

Could you tell me how to better my application?

“I am announcing that I am incapable of determining my own chances of success but I am simultaneously offering to determine yours in return.” Hmmm.

When you have your SAT score, ask again. Test scores aren’t everything, but without an actual score, you are asking everyone to take a huge shot in the dark.

gibby is right that it’s too soon to ask the specific question you’re asking. Come back in the middle of your junior year, after you have some SAT or ACT scores.

In the meantime, be the best you can be at all the things you do. That’s the only advice, really.

Could you give specific advice though? Besides scores, what are somethings I could, realistically, do to make my application stronger?

my88keys: No one here at College Confidential can give you more specific advice. You need to score at least a 2100 on your SAT or the ACT equivalent for your application to be considered competitive. Beyond that, admissions decisions are often based on the “subjective feelings” that a director gets when reading your essays, teacher recommendations and guidance counselor’s SSR.

Your EC’s are absolutely fine. At this point, your weakness is your lone AP score, as a 3 on AP World History will not do much to advance your application at Yale. See: [Table of Acceleration Credit | Yale College](http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/table-acceleration-credit)

You think my EC’s are fine? Like, fine as in adequate? I just get nervous seeing all these kids with great stats. I feel like I have typical EC’s. Could you spot more weaknesses? I know I can’t fix them all, but it’s nice to know where you’re place is.

To be blunt, your biggest weakness is your 1960 practice SAT and your 3 on your AP World History. Currently, your test scores indicate that you are not a competitive applicant for Yale, no matter what your EC’s. First, get those test scores up, then worry about your EC’s.

Thanks. I got a 670 Math, 650 Writing, and 640 CR. In math, I just need to not make stupid mistakes and quicken my pace. In writing, I need to learn all of the rules. In CR, I need to learn vocab, and just comprehend passages a little better.
I was following the silverturtle guide and took an untimed test and scored a 2170. Not perfect, but at least I know I’m capable. I could have scored a little higher, but one Writing section really screwed me up.
Also, could you PLEASE give me some advice on EC’s? :’( I know what you said, but I probably won’t get to talk to you again so, PLEASE?

EC’s are simple: pursue what you love. If you love tennis, pursue it with a laser-like precision. If you love French, purse that with gusto and vigor. Do not think in terms of what colleges want, but rather what you love to do! Yes, it’s that easy!

Thanks a lot!

I agree with gibby! However, don’t stress too much about EC’s, make sure grades and scores are your top priority.

Thanks for answering!
