Chance me please

Hello, I am looking to go to Georgetown University in the Fall of 2012. Please be so kind as to rate my chances of being admitted into the McDonough School of Business. I am currently a senior in high school, and I'm planning to major in Finance/Accounting/Business. Here are my credentials:

Scores/Grades:

Weighted GPA: 4.5 out of 5

This GPA does not factor in my first term senior year grades, which are:

Accelerated English - A-
AP Statistics - A
AP U.S. Government and Politics - A-
Accelerated Mandarin IV - A
AP BC Calculus - A

Class rank: Top ~10-15% (there are ~360 or so students in my grade). My school does not provide students with actual class ranks, so this is only an estimate.

Freshman Year classes: Accelerated English, Accelerated Algebra II, Accelerated World History, Honors Biology, Honors Mandarin I, and other irrelevant electives. At my school, the "Accelerated" level is the highest level besides AP. "Honors" level classes are one level below "Accelerated".

Sophomore Year classes: Accelerated English, Accelerated Geometry, Accelerated World/American History, Honors Physics, Honors Mandarin II, and other irrelevant electives.

Junior Year classes: Accelerated English, Accelerated AB Pre-Calculus, AP U.S. History, Accelerated Chemistry, Accelerated Mandarin III, and other irrelevant electives.

Senior Year classes: Accelerated English, AP BC Calculus, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP Statistics, Accelerated Mandarin IV, and other irrelevant electives.

AP Tests: AP U.S. History - 5
AP BC Calculus - not yet taken
AP U.S. Government and Politics - not yet taken
AP Statistics - not yet taken

SAT Reasoning Test: Math - 800 Reading - 690 Writing - 740
SAT Subject Tests: Math II - 800 U.S. History - 770 Chinese with Listening - 740

Extracurricular Activities/Clubs:

Mandarin Club (4 years): Member
Speech and Debate (1 year): Member, won 3rd place in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Chinese National Honors Society (1 year): Member/tutor
Writing Center (1 year): This is a tutor center for people who need help with writing. Member/tutor
Investment Club (1 year): Member/secretary
Piano (5 years): 5 years District Winner (in National Piano-Playing Auditions), ranked as Advanced-C level by American College of Musicians

Other factors:

I was born in China and came to the United States in 2nd grade. I live in Massachusetts. I am fluent in Mandarin in terms of speaking and listening, but less so in writing. I am generally accepting of people because I value the perspective that others can add to my life.

Thank you so much for reading over this. If there is anything I forgot, please say so and I will provide it. Thanks again!

By the way, I was just deferred from Early Action to Regular Decision. Sad, I know. Is there anything I can add to my application to make my chances during Regular Decision better? Stupidly, I forgot to send my AP U.S. History scores for Early Action and could not send my SAT II Math II score since I got the scores three weeks after the deadline (this meant that I had to send in a SAT II Math II score of 600).

Hi! I applied EA to SFS, and I got in. The biggest flaw I see is your lack of commitment to extracurriculars (only doing mandarin club and piano for all 4 years of high schools). your other activities, though impressive, make it appear as if you joined solely for the purpose of adding it to your resume. Scores and GPA are good, so I don’t think there is a problem with that.

How were your essays?

Also, don’t worry about sending in your AP scores, I didn’t send any of mine in.

In my humble opinion, your biggest flaw is taking mandarin as a foreign language, as well as an SAT2 test. It gives an impression that you are playing it safe and trying to get easy A’s, since you are Chinese and born in China. As you stated, you are fluent in Chinese at home. Therefore, if I’m an AD reviewing your file, I’ll assume that you are gaming the system to your advantage for admission. If you took any other language, it’ll show that you are genuinely trying to learn a new foreign language. In my opinion, this path gives the impression of a typical Asian student who is a high achiever trying to get in, which is plenty in the applicant pool.

Your stats look pretty solid. I just have a question- were any of your essays about being Chinese or coming to America or something about your ethnic background? If so that may have made you look a little one-sided with your only hook being that fact that you’re Chinese. I would sit back and think about what makes you YOU. Something that could make you stand out and then try to incorporate that somehow into another essay or your app for RD if you’re allowed to resubmit part of your application. Good luck!

Thank you all so much for the advice and support. I was pretty down after getting deferred and now I feel much better. Unfortunately, there isn’t too much I can do about extracurricular activities, as it is a bit late. I’ll try to write another essay about how my dad moved away during my sophomore year for a job and how that makes me who I am today, but I’m not entirely sure if I can resend/write another essay. Thanks again

I think you will get in. Your math level II score is good. Did you choose not to send it in immediately without first seeing it? My October series was considered for EA, I believe, and I think it might have made the difference. Have you been interviewed?

Thank you for your confidence in me. I took my Math II SAT Subject Test on November 5th and the scores didn’t come out until November 22nd, and by then it was too late to send in. I took my SAT Reasoning Test in October. I was interviewed for the EA process, but I’m not sure if I will be interviewed for the RD process. My EA interview went very well, the alumni went to a school very much like mine and sounded very impressed with my credentials. We had a very engaging conversation that lasted around 30 minutes.

The fact that you were interviewed will benefit you. You definitely have a much higher chance than the 10% chance that deferred candidates have to get in. Good luck!

Thank you for your encouragement. I think that many if not most people were interviewed (my friend at my HS who also applied EA was interviewed as well, not sure if that’s a big deal), but I certainly hope that you’re right.

Georgetown requires an interview for all undergraduate freshman so don’t get your hopes up on that one sliver of information

If your interview went well, it is significant. I got a call from the Georgetown Interview Committee chairman, and she talked about my interviewer, my interview, and gave me the impression that it was significant in the decision process. An interview in itself isn’t significant, but an interview that went very well can be. Oftentimes, however, we don’t know how well the interview went. It all depends on the report that the interviewers write up.
