Hi! I'm an international student from Belarus and I'm kind of freaking out. I've applied to some US colleges and universities this year, and right now I'm waiting for the decisions.
I really need someone to chance me just to be prepared and calm down a little. I don't have anyone to compare my stats to, so could you do me a favor, please? I would especially appreciate answers of those international students who were accepted to some US colleges. Thank you

Don’t worry about the TOEFL not being very high, it’s mostly used as a threshold - you need >100 for many universities, but that’s it, it’s not an admission factor.

That’s really good news for me =) but still… I’m not that sure about the rest of my application…

The colleges you’ve listed are all highly competitive, even for American students. I can only assume international admissions are even more competitive. The aforementioned schools are reaches for every single applicant. It’s not an indictment of your potential or accomplishments to say they are reaches for you as well.

If your heart is set on attending school in the US, do you have a list of safeties lined up (perhaps top public universities like UCLA, UVA, William & Mary etc.)?

I don’t have any safeties among US schools, 'cause I just can’t afford it. My parents can pay not more than 3500/year plus around 500 from my summer earnings. My safety for now is American University in Bulgaria and some schools in Lithuania (they care about test scores and GPA mostly, and I’m extremely likely to get accepted with a merit scholarship). If I had money I wouldn’t worry that much I guess…

I see; in that case just hope for the best with the schools you’ve applied to. As I said, many deserving applicants are turned down by these universities. But I am also aware of people with credentials similar to yours (or even lesser) that have been admitted to many of those schools. I hope they decide to give you a chance. Good luck!

Thanks:) I hope so too
