Chance me please?

I’m applying as a international freshman for the fall of 2016.

SAT:
-Critical Reading: 770
-Math: 760
-Writing: 650
-Total: 2180

GPA:
-Around 3.8, I don’t know the exact number.

EC:
-Interned at company that writes software for Steel Mills and other steelworks related processes. (ex: They created a software that is used to monitor and help regulate the temperature inside blast furnaces, etc.)

  • Worked at one of the biggest Steel Producers in my country for over 2 years.

Extra Info:

  • I’m applying for a Computer Science major.
  • I’ve graduated high school 2 years ago and decided to spend the first couple years working instead of going to college since I wasn’t completely sure on what I wanted to do.
  • Although I have a fair amount of experience in the Steelworks field, I actually I have absolutely no interest in it. I got into the field mostly because that’s what my family does and what they want me to do.
  • I don’t need financial aid.

Hey! It’s nice to see another international student. What country are you from?

I think you’ll do well. You’ve got a great SAT score. Have you got any other ECs?

Have you got any advanced high school preparations? https://www.cs.washington.edu/prospective_students/undergrad/admissions/direct_admission

Also, try to write positive things about your internship. Essays and ECs are important.

I’m from Brazil.

My country has the same High School curriculum for everybody, so technically I don’t have any advanced high school preparations. I am self-tough in calculus, linear algebra and programming however; but I don’t know how relevant that is since it is hard to prove.

And I do have a few other ECs, but nothing major. I went to drawing school trough the ages of 14~16, I helped teach English for one semester at my English school , and I used to go to soccer training when I was a kid.

Also, with a CR score of 770, should I still take the TOEFL? I know that you don’t need to take if you score over 570 on the critical reading, but would scoring over 110 on the TOEFL still help my chances?

I’m from Indonesia.

Hmm, did you attend an international high school?

Teaching experience is a good EC! I think you should include that too. When I was in high school, I used to teach chemistry classes (both high school and undergraduate-like level).

You should include diverse ECs in your application. Have you got any other ECs?

Regarding TOEFL, while international students are required to submit English proficiency test score(s), it’s stated that SAT/ACT can be used as a substitute. http://admit.washington.edu/Admission/International/EnglishProficiency

It should work, yet I’d suggest you to contact the admission directly. Have you taken TOEFL tests? Submitting one should make your application more competitive.

Actually, your condition is the opposite of mine! I did not take SAT/ACT and only submitted TOEFL score.

They accepted me!

Oh yeah, should they accept you, your score will exempt you from taking UW Academic English Program
