chance me please?

GPA: 3.64 weighted, 3.95 weighted. kinda low I know, but I've taken the hardest classes offered (6 APs the last two years - the most that were available to me)

no class rank; I go to a hippieish arts school

ACT Composite: 33 (36 English, 35 Reading, 33 Science, 26 Math - ps, I suck at math)

currrently taking
AP Cal BC ew
AP Eng Lit
AP Gov/Econ
not a lot I know but it's all my school offers.

last year I got 4s on both my APUSH and AP Art History exams

extracurriculars:
as I mentioned above, I go to an arts school, where I major in Creative Writing - which means I have 3 hours of CW classes every day and go to school from 8 - 4:30. our school doesn't sponsor clubs as to not "take away from specialty time"
- VP of senior class
- VP of Key Club (city-wide)
- Student Council rep, 11th-12th grade
- I've planned Invisible Children events (The Rescue, etc.) around where I live since 10th grade
- columnist for my local paper
- Habitat for Humanity since I was 14
- taken piano since forever... much like everyone else on the planet
- ambassador at my school
- I work part-time at an art gallery

awards:
- winner of multiple national writing contests (not going to list them here, then you could google me and that's creepy!) and publication is forthcoming in a local journal. the most recent of these contests won me $5000 and a trip to the awards gala in New York City, where I was honored alongside Toni Morrison (still trying to wrap my head around that) and that brings me to my next point...

the head judge of the aforementioned writing contest is a professor at Yale. she offered to write a letter of rec for me sooo who was I to refuse? :) and I think my other one is pretty legit, too.

and I'd like to think my essays are really good, but of course I could be totally wrong.

anyway, yeah, I applied EA and cannot wait until we find out!! Chicago's my number one and has been for a long time

ohhhh and I submitted a creative writing portfolio

well, good luck!
I hope you get in! and I hope we all get in, actually.

i would say u are in… gpa is not all too improtant for chicago, as long as you have challenged yourself.

If you really played up the writing thing, thats great

GOOD LUCK … hope i can join you next year at the UoC:)

^^ What?! GPA is quite important at Chicago. Yes the essays are weighed heavily but they don’t account for so much weight that GPA is deemed “not all too important.”

“gpa is not all too improtant for chicago”

That’s an absurd and false statement.

Look on their website on the priority of things they look at.

1) Essays…Rigor of Curriculum…Letters of Recommendation

2) GPA…Standerdized Test Scores…EC’s

I did not say it was not important, I said it was not all too important, or that it is the first thing they look at. Of course, a 3.1 GPA will be a big no no, but a 3.5 or 3.6, with excellent things from the number 1 category will outweigh the GPA.

Your GPA is low for Chicago, so that Chicago will probably be a low reach or a reach.

You’ll be battling with kids with both high GPAs and excellent things from category 1. GPA is very important, and 85% of matriculating students are in the top 10% in terms of class rank. If you have a 3.6 and are in the top 10%, then this makes Chicago much more feasible. But otherwise, it’s going to be very difficult to get in. It’s certainly not impossible, but you’ll have to write excellent essays (by which I mean better than the other applicants, who also all think they have excellent essays) and have great recommendations.

Adding my voice to the crowd: The rigor of your courseload by itself will not at all excuse you for having a low GPA. Your essays may tip the scale, but otherwise, they’re looking for high GPA + rigorous courseload. They want to know you can handle the work, not just that you can take the most difficult classes.

On a side note, it is crazy weird that I have a 3.64 UWGPA and a 33 on the ACT as well. As I was reading the original post I was like, “WAIT! Did I write this?! I don’t remember writing this…”

On a second note, that unknown rank is going to be a problem possibly. At my school, which is also rather hippie or I should say “liberal,” a 3.65 is top twenty (class size just over 100). Mind you this is a very, very selective private school with not a whole lot of grade inflation, so I’m rather proud of my GPA. As for you, I don’t really know what kind of school you go to, so I can’t say about your GPA. Judging from your high ACT score, I’d say you’re probably ranked rather highly in your class, but I’m not really sure. Other than that unknown, you seem to be a pretty strong applicant. If I was you, and comparing our stats we’re essentially the same, the only thing I would be concerned about is my GPA (and I am concerned about my GPA). However, that 26 Math is not gonna look so good, but not enough to throw you out, I think.

sigh Looks like I’m beyond fu**** if his GPA brings him down so much. I’m only top 20% in a…public school. Granted we’re rated as a ‘Silver-Medal’ school by USA Today, but things are definitely not looking my way…why couldn’t my school use a 90-100 grading scale, why (I’d have a 4.0 if it did…)!!!

Enough with my rage, your only downfall is your GPA.

If it is any consolation, S1 was admitted with an unweighted GPA of 3.46.

idad, I glean from your other posts that you are from WA? did your son go to Lakeside by chance, if you don’t mind me asking?

(totally understand if you don’t feel comfortable answering)

Yeah, we have a crazy-rigorous workload, so my GPA is still good - in terms of our school, at least (we were ranked the 4th public high school in US News a few years back). My class size is around 70 and I’m in the top 20%. Our counselor isn’t allowed to get any more specific than that for whatever reason, so she just tells us top 20, top 40, etc. Don’t know why, dumb policy. But my GPA is what I’m most worried about - I’m hoping my 36 on English and 35 on Reading will make up for my really crappy math score. And btw I’m a girl haha

Yes, idad, that is definitely a consolation!
