thanks

AU’s GPA average is 3.5. Only 5% or so of their incoming freshmen have GPA around 3.0 or lower. It does not matter whether it is from crazy competitive HS or not or whether that is equivalent to higher GPA of American schools. HSs in USA are all over the map: there are even more difficult schools and there are easier schools. Their average SAT CR+M (they don’t use W section) is about 1260. So in terms of numbers (putting GPA and SAT together), you are not in a comfortable position.

So, if they think your ECs are very desirable and interesting, you will be able to overcome your weakness in terms of SAT, GPA etc. You do sound like you have interesting stuff.

Good luck.

What is your SAT score without the writing? Most schools don’t use the writing.

thnks for the advice guys…not including writing (it was my highest…) i have a 1150 i think?

3.0/1150 is a tough sell regardless of how competitive your school is. Who knows, you may get in: you have an interesting background

Make sure you apply to universities/colleges that are safeties for you just in case. I hear some parents saying every year, on CC, they hear about kids who did not get in anywhere since they did not gauge their odds well, and did not include any safeties.

If you are looking for safety schools with your stats and background, and can’t think of good ones, why don’t you post on a Parents Forum. There are many very experienced and knowledgeable parents who can give you wonderful ideas.

Good luck.

If you want to know your chances with a 3.0, figure out your class rank. I have a 3.8 but that’s like the 83rd percentile (i’m within the top fifth). My school claims not to rank but most schools do have that info somewhere even if they don’t tell colleges. Also, american is not very diverse so they would probably choose someone like you even if your gpa is sub par

Yeah You’re grades seem sort of low but the interesting biographical details will definately help. even if you are an American studying in Hong Kong they’d probly count you as an international and virtually every school wants to keep those numbers up. So overall you seem to me to have a decent chance, though not spectacular. Maybe 60/40 getting in? Hope that helped a little

I applied as well and would appreciate someone chancing me. My weighted GPA is 3.65 freshman year, 3.9 sophmore year, 4.2 junior year, this year will be about 4.3. So 9th-11th cummulative weighted is 3.97 and unweighted is 3.85. I’ve taken 7 APS and have 5s on all of them. SAT is 2140, 1360 without writing.
The only problem is- im super average otherwise. I work and have normal extra curriculars but i don’t have anything special. I’m middle class from a nice town and am afraid I don’t have a hook for these schools.
