Chance Me Please

I have a 3.5 GPA and have OK test scores (my highest ACT score is a 24). I have good EC's though that include a book project where I am collecting drawings from children living in areas affected by war, famine, disease, and/or natural disasters. I have already collected over a hundred drawings and my goal is to publish them in the book. Another project I have been working on is called 'Books for Vietnam' where I held a book drive at my local elementary school to collect American books and ESL resources for Vietnamese children. Do I have a chance of getting into Clark, despite my low ACT score?

It would be helpful to know a little bit more about you. Male or female? Geographic location. Type of school you attend. Rigor of your curriculum. Any honors or AP classes? Has your GPA gone up over time? Any hooks?

Your ACT score would put you in the lower 25 percent of those who are admitted, but Clark loves kids who are unique and true to themselves, and your ECs are really amazing.

Have you gone for an interview? I would strongly suggest doing so. I suspect you’ve tested several times, but do you think there is any chance you could get your ACT up to even a 26?

My daughter just got accepted ED to Clark, and I know she would love to have someone like you as a classmate. Good luck.

I’m a female and live about an hour away from Worcester so Clark is pretty close. Throughout HS, I’ve taken honors/non-honors/AP courses (I’m only taking one AP class right now as my school does not offer many AP courses). My grades have steadily improved since freshmen year and I think junior year was def. my best year. My ACT score was brought down by math (I have received a 27 on English and 32 on Reading) since I actually have an LD in math. I’d really like to major in IR and from my understanding, IR is Clark’s most popular major.

If you haven’t already you should interview at Clark. You might want to write something in the Clark supplemental application about overcoming your LD in math. Your reading and English scores are fine for Clark. I think Clark would be a low reach for you, but you definitely would have a chance for admission there. Is it your first choice or are you leaning towards anywhere else?

Overall, do you think I have a solid chance of being admitted? I do like Clark, mainly because of its IR program and plan to visit during this break.

I don’t hold myself to be any kind of expert on college admissions, but based on the information you’ve provided I think Clark would be a low reach, not a solid match. Your total ACT score puts you in the lower 25 percent of those students who are admitted to Clark. I think you can mitigate the low math score by explaining your LD. You have a good GPA and great ECs. I think an interview would be very important. Clark is one of those schools that really looks for kids who march to their own drum beats, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you were accepted for admission. Good Luck! Keep us posted.

Hi, Clark U is my top choice right now and I applied RD. My GPA is like a 3.2 or something along those lines weighted, but my grades have been going up significantly throughout my HS career. My ACT score is a 27. I have a decent amount of extra curriculars, like part time work experience at a local music store and working at summer camp teaching bass. I also believe I have very good recommendations.

What are my chances? Anything I’m missing?

Thank you all so much!

It would help to have more detail about your stats. Are you a male or female? What type of school do you attend? Rigor of your curriculum? What is your UW GPA? Any ECs related to school activities? Music, sports? Leadership positions? Did you vist Clark and have an interview? Any hooks?

I’m a male. I go to a public school. Core classes are: honors english, AP government, pre-calculus, physics, and economics. I’m also taking various academic electives such as sociology (possible major) and forensics. I don’t know my unweighted GPA since my school only gives us our weighted ones. School activities are Mock trial, yearbook photographer, and freshman mentor. I did visit Clark and had an interview the same day.

With the caveat that I am not an admissions officer and don’t pretend to understand how these decisions get made, I suspect Clark is a soft match or low reach for you. I’m a little concerned about your GPA because it probably puts you in a lower end of those who are admitted, but this might be offset by the rigor of your courses and the fact that your grades have been improving over time. The size of the applicant pool last year was about 2000 less than the previous year due to the economic recession. If those numbers continue this year it will probably improve your chances. Also, being male improves your chances. I would suggest working really hard to get (or keep) your first semester grades up since the admissions office will look at them for RD applicants. Good Luck!

Yeah I know how important my first semester grades are for RD. I had a 98 average first quarter, so as long as my second quarter grades are around that I think that’ll help. Thanks!

Hi, i’m sorry to steal someone elses thread here, but i’d really like to get ClarkAlum’s thoughts on whether or not I can get into Clark. (and anyone else’s opinion of course)

I’m a white male, from out of state

3.35 GPA unweighted, class rank is somewhere between top 50 and top 25 percent, i think around top 30 (sorry i can’t be more accurate) 2 Ap classes, 2 honors classes.
29 act, 33 english, 33 reading, 24 math, 26 science.
Letter winner in 3 sports, captain of 2 sports, AP scholar award winner, also tutor ESL outside of school

again, sorry for the thread hijack, just really curious!

Hi
I think without any other details about you Clark would be a match. Your GPA, ACT scores and great ECs would make you very competitive. Have you toured the campus and had an interview? Good Luck!

Just for those of you who don’t know, Clark re-evaluates all the GPAs reported to us and a lot of our focus is on the academic standing of the student. So if you have a decent GPA and standardized test scores whether it is SAT or ACT, you would be safe to consider yourself with a good chance.

Does anyone know about the PhD program in Geography at Clark? I recently applied, seemed a real solid research oriented department.
I got a 1270(640 V, 630 Q) on GRE, have about 3.8 in undergrad and 3.5 in MBA program. Looking to make the transition to doing research in econ. Geography and Clark seems like a great place.
Any tips would be appreciated!

-I even know they call the town Wooooster by now. =)

Correct if that’s “oo” as in “foot” rather than “boot.” (And if you really want to sound like a native, don’t pronounce the R: “Wussta.”)

I know that the Geography program is very competitive and regarded as one of the best grad programs at Clark. Good luck!
