<p>It is one of the amusing abuses of the AP system. Since there is no AP test, there should not be an AP course, yet when a school names it with AP it gets special treatment by college admissions officers, who assume it is college level material. </p>
<p>You can list the class on your application, since you legitimately took it, but I wouldn’t list it under APs when posting places like here because generally of its somewhat questionable status. <p>A class that is AP should be preparing a student to take one of these and thus gain college level credit. It is not just another way of saying “honors” or “advanced”.</p>
<p>The college board is working on a change where they will certify schools use of the term AP in a course name due in part to misuse of the term. There are also schools that call a course AP but don’t actually teach the material needed to pass the test. They just use the naming to make the course sound more impressive and to help the students get an advantage if the college admissions office doesn’t know the details of that class.</p>
