i say your gonna get accepted to all of them. Only one i’m not sure about is Duke. Some of those schools might reject/waitlist you because you’re overqualified.

Ummm…@yuxuanchen…did you see my grades? Is that not going to be a problem? Also, @yuxuanchen, are you a parent, high school student, college student, or college grad?

I see a lot of question marks in your application.

Why did you switch schools so often?

Why don’t you have AP scores?

Also, your essay topic about “realization of a passion for learning” just screams ******** to me.

Also, Are your test scores projected or have they already happened?

Personally, I look at your application and see laziness and last-minute panic and colleges will see that right away and know your senior grades are solely because you wnat to get into college (you won’t believe how many people are extremely smart like you are but were lazy).

Not to be rude, but you’re not overqualified (because of the grades you have). You’ll still get into half or more of those schools listed, though (won’t get merit aid from Emory, I’m almost certain).

If I were in your position, I would try to get some kind of scholarship to UCLA or Berkeley. I’m not even sure why you’re applying to Emory to do physics. Like I said before.

School switching-Dad got a new job at end of 9th grade and then my school would not let me graduate for some reason at end of 11th so I am switching; AP Scores-took the exams but got in my results for subject tests and cancelled the AP Scores (dunno why); all test scores have happened (only potentials are senior grades, recs/essays, and the 5 national math/science results I plan to get and submit in mid-Feb and early March NEXT year). This is quite funny b/c a bunch of other people are saying that I won’t get into any of the schools I mentioned in the parents forum but fellow students think I’ll get into some if not all…lol. Also, can someone post a good second essay topic that kind of fits in the grades situation?

To be blunt, your application has a ton of holes, and I can see why people would think that.

You switched schools twice but you somehow are going to get stellar recs (adcoms will see right away that the recs have no value if they’re like “omg, hez th3 b2st ev4r”)

No AP scores is a serious flaw with the classes you’ve taken.

Apparently you’re agnostic but you volunteer in a mosque.
Passion for learning essay is just a bad idea if you’re lazy (like it looks like you are).

3.85 weighted GPA is terrible.

The schools you listed (especially WashU) are solely going to want you in order for them to say that one of their matriculating students had a perfect test score.

You’ll get into half of those schools would be my guess but don’t be surprised if it’s less.
I wish you luck, though.

@aluminum_boat,thanks. My recs won’t be the best ever but more like very hardworking and inspiring. My AP Scores I think can be made up for by my SAT Subject Test scores and maybe the national math/science results if they come through in time. My parents make me go to a mosque even though they know I’m agnostic. It’s more of a cultural thing and I volunteer on behalf of just that. The fact that Wash U might take me just to get perfect test scores is pretty hilarious but awesome. The 3.85 weighted is pretty bad I agree, but I hope that colleges might take my senior grades as a maturity gained from the result of my mistakes and not a hastened smokescreen. Others, please post.

Lets be fair, drmagic, on the parents forum you were asking about full-tuition, great merit aid. I am glad that you like the student answers more, especially since most of them have not applied and seen crazy rejections like most of the parents have.

Want a hidden gem for physics that has teh potential for merit aid? Check with Lawrence University. It is a CTCL school and has a great physics department. Your GPA is not great, adn I am still confused why you would put science awards that you haven’t earned in your chance me threads, as well as Math President when it is a new school.

And agree with aluminum_boat, canceling the AP scores would be yet another red flag to an admission officer.

o ****, lol. My focus was mainly on the test scores and EC’s, so i kind of expected you to have a good GPA. Apparently not. I guess i missed that whole section. Your rank is also not looking too good. Well, now your definitely not overqualified BUT i think your test scores alone will get you into Umich, UCLA, and possibly Emory. Everything else now, i’m not sure about. Btw, don’t talk about your nationality in your essay cause you will be considered “one of them”.
I’m an accepted student to Emory.

What is your UW GPA?

It’s a little reach-y as it looks like you might be a tad under 3.5 but you could certainly apply and see what happens.

On a 4.0 scale following are Emory’s statistics from the common data set from last year. Common data set is data from enrolled students, so all of these were kids who were offered admissions and are attending.

79.1% had 3.75 - 4.0
18.3% had 3.50 - 3.74
2.3% 3.25 - 3.49

Merit would be a crap shoot. Need based aid would be TBD your family’s situation.

Ok, I won’t talk about my nationality but more about being raised as an agnostic in a religious household and being Democratic in a nearly 100% Republican town. The thing is that in my current school, there is no un-weighted GPA. Each AP class gets you 5, honors 4.5, and regular 4.0 for a full A. Each percentage point lowers your GPA. The same rule pretty much applies to my new school. Thus, my new school does not do an un-weighted GPA, and I’ve asked my counselor and said that this 3.85 is THE GPA and there is no other one. So, I think this would be the un-weighted GPA. Correct me if I’m wrong. Math Club really doesn’t exist at my own school and the officials there have allowed to me start one next year and be the president as well. About the AP exams, I was registered for them, but cancelled them (did not take). Actually, a lot of people at my old school took the AP classes w/o taking the AP exams.

@momofthreeboys, would my test scores, ec’s, competition results, essays, and recs not boost me enough to give me a good chance for at least Emory University? I mean it’s acceptance rate is 26%. If so, what would be my chances at U Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Vanderbilt, Wash U, UC Berkeley, UCLA, U Michigan, and Notre Dame.

You can almost do this in your head…an A= 4, a B=3 and a C=1 that is a quick way to figure an unweighted GPA on a 4 point scale. You’ll be close to 3.5 I suspect looking at your list. Collegeboard has a calculator that will do the math for you if it’s too challenging to do in your head :-)

RE: AP, most college applications let you self report APs so not reporting AP scores probably doesn’t mean a whole lot. Actually it’s too bad you didn’t take the tests the AP credits, if you end up at a college that accepts the APs, are like freebies.

If you like Emory why would you not apply? Find a couple schools that are stretches, a couple that are matches and a couple where you are a sure bet for admissions and you will be fine.

Using this scale, momofthreeboys, I think I’ll have a 3.4 UW. That goes to everyone else as well. Please tell me my chances now. BTW, does an A- count the same as an “A” on this scale?

You can use this chart but it won’t change things by much I don’t think. Nobody can tell you want your “chances are.” If you like this university you should apply. Your GPA is lower than average for accepted kids but your test scores are higher than average…no one can “predict” how that will be viewed so you’re just going to have to not worry and if you like this university…apply in the fall.

A 4.00
A- 3.67
B+ 3.33
B 3.00
B- 2.67
C+ 2.33
C 2.00
C- 1.67
D+ 1.33
D 1.00
D- 0.67
F 0.00

My S went to Emory Pre-College Program which included several meeting with admissions. My S said that Emory does recalculate your GPA to include only the important classes and calculates grades only as A, B, or C if you have some of those. Thus an A+ or an A-, becomes a 4.0 for an A. Not sure if anyone has heard any different, and not sure this materially changes someone’s GPA. All I know is he said they do recalculate the grade points as discussed. Good luck!
