You have very strong extracurriculars and your app shows define direction.
Ivies are always tossups but I’d say you have a fair chance at most of them, sans maybe Yale and Princeton. Plus if you ED at Penn, you have a fairly good chance of acceptance.
You are honestly super qualified for both Harvard and Princeton but, I think they’re looking for a different brand of student. You are a fun spunky and an amazing writer I can see that but Harvard and Princeton are more preppy in my opinion. I just have the feeling be reading your college app you’re not the type to attend those schools. Have you looked into Journalism because theres this school at USC Annenberg (I think that’s how you spell it?) that you seem really cut out for and I see you going there for some reason not sure. You don’t have to look into it, but I just don’t see you personally as someone who would go to a college like those. Nevertheless, you’re an amazing student and highly qualified and you might get in but I just don’t see it.
I understand! I wasn’t sure if that’s what you meant or if there was some specific weakness I could address. I do see myself more as a Yale/Brown/Penn (because of the Writers House) type of girl. Thanks again! @softiestudies
I really think you have a great chance to be accepted to these schools. I love the Kelly’s Writer House at UPenn and actually submitted a portfolio! It’s great that you’ve been in contact with the people there; I contacted them fairly late because I didn’t know about it until my senior year.
I’ve actually known about them since freshman year because the EIC of one of the literary journals I work for is involved with recruitment. I met with Jamie-Lee in person a little over a week ago. @yalehopeful017
You have very strong extracurriculars, but it’s hard to determine without your SAT Subject tests and your SAT 1 scores, but your GPA seems very strong! I think you are on the right track with your extracurriculars, just make sure the strength of your academic scores match them! Good luck!
@writergirl0316 Way to be on top of things! I literally talked to my English teacher and high school counselor earlier this year and neither had even heard of KWH…which is interesting because we send a few kids to UPenn every year. I seriously am so lost when it comes to opportunities to get awards; I never had heard of “silver keys” or “gold keys” until earlier this year. We’ll see what happens to me, haha
Thanks for replying to my thread OP! I think your focus on writing is really going to give you an edge if you push it just enough, so keep that in mind as you’re filling out apps next year!
Here are my predictions:
Yale- accept/waitlist
Penn- waitlist
Princeton- reject
Brown- accept/waitlist (lots of ECs for writing)
Harvard-reject
BU- accept
Geneseo- accept
Emory- accept
Georgetown- accept
Vassar- accept
Wellesley- accept
I think you have an amazing profile - well rounded with a specific focus as well - just what colleges look for! Needless to say, you would be a competitive applicant at all of these schools, though the ivies are generally hard to predict.
Personally, I would encourage you to ED to Penn, as they have an AMAZING English program. I think the chances of you being admitted under the ED program there would also be pretty high.
I don’t know a lot about Yale’s SCEA, but I would assume its a lot more competitive (and the pool would be very different than ED Penn). Also, if this has not been mentioned yet, you can withdraw from your ED agreement if you feel that their financial aid does not satisfy your needs.
I applied Yale SCEA actually and was deferred ^ I would definitely say go for UPenn, you have a far better chance there and it’ll be nice to have a stress free senior year.
I know there’s a lot on this thread, but there were a bunch of people earlier saying that I would be more likely to be accepted at Yale because it’s more “analytical intellectual” to Penn’s “action intellectual.” I’m not too sure about my comparative chances anymore haha. @yalehopeful017
