Very true. She did not create the systemic racist structures over the past 200+ years that made necessary policies like the ones obliquely referenced. Hopefully, she will enroll in a school that will provide a wonderful education and living experience during her time there.
Your post contains solid & sensitive advice as does @EconPop insightful guidance.
@tsbna44 offers helpful, well-intentioned and important advice phrased in a direct, but a bit of insensitive, manner. Clearly, everyone wants to help OP.
OP: Consider applying to some schools at which you will qualify for automatic merit scholarships. Why not ask for advice on which schools would do so ?
I cannot chance you at your targeted schools other than to say that Georgetown & USC are reaches for all and that you are a competitive candidate for an offer of admission. Nevertheless, I think that you should consider adding acouple of universities to your list that would offer automatic merit scholarship money.
All - apologies if I come off as insensitive. This is a chance me. I am not trying to denigrate anyone. I am not trying to make political statement. I am trying to share with the OP her chances as I see them and the opportunity in front of her to attend one of these schools.
I don’t believe her stats warrant entry at those schools. I was concerned with the class rank.
We are all amateurs - and this is my opinion. In the end, only the admissions counselors can decide.
The fact is - many schools do have a secondary set of criteria that they use for specific groups - and I am simply stating this may be the best way for the OP to get in. Hence, I mentioned the fly-in programs that were directed at underrepresented groups. This is a fact; this is not me saying, you’ll only get in because of such and such. That’s all of you thinking I have ill intent and it’s not even remotely the case.
It’s also why I mentioned the 100% meets needs schools and Questbridge - because yes, students get in via programs like this that otherwise would not get in.
I was not commenting on anyone’s capabilities, deservedness, or otherwise. I am not making a political stand as someone mentioned above. @EconPop I am also not commenting on someone only getting an opportunity because of their identity. I was simply pointing out available programs that in reality do allow a prospect an enhanced opportunity. I am again, not commenting, on the OP who has put together a very solid resume.
I was giving an honest assessment of admittance chances - and acknowledging to the OP the realities as I see them. I would also encourage her to apply for a fly-in program if any remain available to her and any student should take advantage of any opportunity to put their best foot forward.
These are chance mes - and that’s what I did.
I’m sorry if some are confused by the tone. I am direct - I am not looking to massage egos. That helps no one (in my opinion).
I also believe, as I’ve stated on many other threads, that the person, not the school, will make their success - and I have no doubt that any student, with the right level of persistence (and occasional good luck) can be successful no matter where they attend - top perceived or not.
Hopefully we can move on from this now - everyone has their opinions and I simply stated mine.
Thanks
And all will be well served by addressing the OP in responses, not each other.
Your stats look great! Please come back in the spring (or sooner?) to let us know where you end up. I hope it’s some place you will love.
Nice to see you have some safety options in as well. The only advice I would give is to take a good look at the four schools and ask yourself “Why” what about that school made you interested. After you have a clear picture of why you feel it’s a fit look through your safeties and make sure they check some of those boxes too. What you want to avoid is that you love Georgetown based on their mission and Core values and location but didn’t include Fordham as a potential match.
My favorite piece of advice that gets mentioned on these forums is “Sprout where you are planted”. Whether it’s Georgetown or Houston, embrace your choice and go all in on the experience. College is pretty short, you don’t want to spend the first years trying to transfer out. You may end up there for grad school or law school if its a fit.
