My stats
1550 SAT
800 Math level 2
760 Physics
4.0 GPA
Yale Young global scholars alumni
Head of Interns at a company for 8 months
Took a lot of online programming courses
Read a lot of books
I’ve been an admin of a facebook group for 2 years.
I have an award from my internship, 2 from my school.
I’ve got a certificate for being at the top 1% of an online programming course for Arabs of all ages.
I am an international student from Egypt living in Saudi Arabia, so most of my ECs are online.
I am planning to apply to Yale SCEA and Vanderbilt ED 2
Does Vanderbilt provide significant aid for international students? (I am applying for the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship too)
Do I have a realistic chance of getting to these schools or am I wasting my ED boost?
Is either school affordable? Have you run the Net Price Calculators? I saw from another thread that your parents can contribute $5000/year. Since you are international, some of that money will have to go to travel as well. Vandy only offers need-based financial aid to a limited number of international students.
@suzy100
Without financial aid none of them is affordable.
Yale is need-blind so the problem is getting in.
Do you think that by applying to Vandy early I’m wasting my ED boost?
But is Yale or Vandy affordable if you are admitted? Did you run the Net Price Calculator on their websites?
Is the NPC valid for internationals?
NPC page fro Yale https://admissions.yale.edu/estimate-your-cost Note it states that the calculation will be different for international students living abroad. That being said, Yale is need blind and need met for internationals.
The npc isn’t valid for internationals
And my income is low so I know that if I am admitted the financial aid package will suit me.
The problem is getting admitted.
Both Yale and Vanderbilt NPCs do ask questions that determine whether the user is an international student, so the OP should try them to see what they say.
I want to know whether these schools are realistic to me and whether vandy is generous with international students or not?
For your admission chances, see http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/2095312-generic-chance-answer-for-super-selective-colleges.html
I know Yale is a high reach but what about Vandy?
Also, Swarthmore
Your numbers are in the range. Yale, Vandy, and Swarthmore are all reasonable for you to take a shot at. Nobody can tell you whether you’d be admitted. It will depend on your essays and recommendations.
Bottom line is that nobody is going to say that it will be impossible for you to be admitted, based on those scores. If you told us your SAT was 1350 and GPA 3.4, we’d say don’t waste your time.
Wow! Congrats on your impressive high school career! I’d say you’re right on target for Vanderbilt.
You have a chance but its low despite your achievements: international students face a higher hurdle – as they should. Your ECs are sort of meannigless and online ECs–are worth little. I think you have a slightly better shot at Vanderbilt.
