I’m not an underrepresented minority.
I’m not a first generation American.
I don’t have any family members that have attended West Point.
Your scores are quiet above west point. It’s mostly officer training but with more intelligence, but can’t be compared to the ivy league anyhow. Why do you want to go to West Point? The only important thing is getting a recommendation to go there.
I have always had a strong interest in being in the military, specifically the Army. I’m not trying to go to West Point simply because they offer a free education, I can get full ride at many schools. If I don’t get in to West Point I will probably do ROTC. I know that the end result of ROTC and West Point are the same, but I just feel like West Point fits me better than a “normal” school.
By a recommendation, do you mean a nomination?
Not true! (regardless of whether referring to a nomination, or something else). Even after obtaining a nomination, the odds of getting into West Point are no better than 20% (and probably a lot less).
@2020academy you will probably get a nomination. No one can tell you if you would get an appointment but your odds are good given your ACT score and varsity athletics. Eagle scout helps too. If you can become an officer in student government, that would be a sizable benefit.
ROTC scholarships can be used at Virginia Military Institute too, which has many similarities to West Point. Perhaps also look into Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.
Where the heck do you go to school that a 3.9 and 230 PSAT only puts you in the top quarter of the class?
If you want a military education leading to a commission in the Army, also look at The Citadel and VMI. Also Texas A&M’s Corp of Cadets.
You should contact your local West Point field force rep, the link amwilborn posted will probably work. You should also contact all possible nominating sources your congressman, senators and the Vice President. They will have links on their website explaining how to apply. You definitely have the stats to be very competitive in the applicant pool. Get started now because the steps in academy admissions take time. Also, have a strong backup plan as even very strong candidates aren’t admitted in some cases
Okay, I would strongly urge you to reconsider. It seems your grades and sat scores enable you to shoot for some of the nation’s top schools. I remember I had a stage like yours. I had some family problems and all I wanted to do was join West Point to join the army. But then I rethought it and decided to apply to Columbia and got in. Today, that decision to go a more academic route I think is the better decision. Just make sure you’re sure that it’s really what you want.
