Dear procrastinator12 : As I have often stated, I typically highlight responses to chance-me threads that have some lessons that might be applicable to others thinking about Boston College. Your profile clearly has some interesting elements that would be attractive to a Boston College reader.

The real question for you is one of a personal nature : how would you feel about being 10 or more hours from home by air travel - particularly come holiday times like Thanksgiving that might not afford you the time to travel home and back to school.

As you get ready for the November gathering this Thanksgiving, give the question some very serious thought. It is one thing to think “I do not mind being away for Thanksgiving.” It is quite another to realize that you will be away from home for the 12 prior weeks and the 3 that follow. Perhaps I am overemphasizing this time/distance question in your personal situation. However, your profile provides some unusual characteristics with your Hawaii location; it deserves more thought than the typical profile.

Hawaii -> Geographically Unique +
ACT 33 -> +
Course Rigor -> +
ECs -> +
Rank 2nd decile -> -
UW GPA ~3.6 -> Avg
School Reputation - Assuming Punahoa (or Kamahameha) -> +
Intended School - Carroll Business

Under normal circumstances I’d say Carroll would be a little “reachy” for you. But as scottj points out there are a lot of unique qualities to your app that work in your favor (let’s face it - there just aren’t a lot of Hawaiian applicants anywhere except UHawaii).

As for the distance issue I think it’s a valid concern, though I’ll suggest that with a little luck you’ll make enough friends to get invited to someone’s house for Turkey Day. Your family will be far away but you won’t be alone. While Boston is almost literally the other side of the world, Hawaii is a long plane flight to anywhere. Even going to school in California will involve a 5-6 hour flight home.

That said I had a Hawaiian roommate in college. Mom wouldn’t hear of him not coming for holiday dinners. The bigger issue might be an adjustment to the weather. My roommate would seemingly wear all the clothes that he owned all at the same time right after the first of October. Obviously over time we “toughened him up” with warmer parkas and sweaters but the first year the cold was a real shock for him. Not a deal breaker but certainly something to prepare for.

If you attend “that” private school in HI, and you have Hawaiian ancestry, you will be a shoo-in at BC (and many other colleges), assuming decent essay and recs. The odds drop w/o Hawaiian ancestry, however, but geogpraphic diversity still comes into play at most colleges.

The travel situation is a tough one. You should also consider west coast colleges.

Good luck.

Hi!
Thank you for your responses and your concerns.

However, I just like to point out that I really like the East Coast (and its accessibility) and that all of the colleges I am applying to are IN the East Coast. Coming home isn’t a really big deal for me as I plan to only come home for Winter Break (yes, escaping Boston at the worst time of the year) and do internships/work during summer. Unfortunately, family issues-wise, we aren’t that close and we often quarrel a lot. Despite this being the internet, I really appreciate your concerns about this topic and it really touches me.

I’m actually Chinese/Asian so that is uhm quite opposite from being Hawaiian; there goes a hook.
@Vinceh I actually go to Iolani (which I, with complete and utter bias, would argue is a better school than Punahou and Kamehameha academically hahahaha). We’ve actually sent quite a lot of kids to BC and HOPEFULLY I’m one of them! :)

I’m also applying to:
Georgetown
John Hopkins
Villanova
Lehigh
Boston U
Tufts

Thanks again for your inputs.
