Chance me?

ACT: 34
SAT Subject Tests: Math 2: 800, Chemistry: 800
GPA: 3.79 - this is my biggest weakness…
Rank: no rank
i hope its more reasonable that I took the most rigorous courses offered
APs: Chemistry (4), Biology (4), Calculus AB (5), Computer Science (4)
classes this year: 5 APs: Calc BC, Art History, Stats, Physics C, Psychology

Ive read that Brown first looks to see if you are academically qualified, then if u are, u are judged on fit for Brown thru extracurriculars, recs, and essays… I feel in these areas, I am very very qualified and my XCs clearly show a fit for specificially qualified.

so my question is… for my stats, noticablly the 3.79… will it make it past the first cut?

thx.

and oh yeah… asian male… no financial aid… intended major of psychology

Why no one here can answer this question – it depends on your rank, on what your guidance counselor says, on what the admissions office knows about and thinks about your high school, on your transcript. Your GPA is not a stand-alone figure – it has to be placed in a larger context. Other factors – is the GPA “low” because of freshmen year? because you always get lower grades in one specific subject? because of junior year? What is totally irrelevant – your ethnicity, your ability to pay and your academic interest.

@fireandrain Is having low grades in a specific subject considered better than low grades in many subjects? What would they think if my low grades were from math - and ironically I have 800 sat 2 math and 36 act math?
My intended major is psychology, which is not math-heavy- would that be advantageous?
I am full pay- and my school is fairly competitive and rigorous- my bad grades were mainly from freshman but not all-

Where are you from and did you go to private or public school?

Brown does not accept into majors. So it’s irrelevant that you are planning to concentrate in psychology. And as I said, the fact that you are full pay is not a factor. (I promise you, they will NOT look at your grades and say, “Oh look, he’s full pay so we’ll lower our standards and accept him despite his slightly lower GPA.”)

I don’t work in admissions. I can’t answer your specific questions. My guess is that it’s better to have lower grades as a freshman than as a junior. That it’s better if your lower grades are in AP classes. My total guess is that it’s probably better if your lower grades are consistently in one subject area – that’s just logical to me. A 3.79 is not a low GPA – unless you are ranked really low in your school.
