Hey Guys, So recently I have been very worried. I’m currently a junior and I have a 3.46. You might think that I have been slacking trough my school career and you actually wont be wrong when concerning freshman and sophomore year. Freshman year I ended with a 3.17. After I calculated my gpa freshman year I decided enough was enough and I decide enough was I tried to work harder sophomore year. After the year I ended out with a 3.08. Now, my sophomore year gpa was ruined by two classes. One is a business class and That class is known to have a teacher that is one of the worst in the whole school. The other was caused by a French teacher who decided to be absent the last half of the and we got stuck with a substitute who knew nothing of French and we got screwed over because of it. During my junior year I eventually decided I have to get my act together. I ended this year with a 4.0. I worked my ass off from the beginning of this year to the end of it. The 4.0 I earned was also when I was taking 6 AP classes in that year.
So this is how it goes:
Frosh:3.17:1 AP, 2 Honors
Soph: 3.08: 2 AP, 2 Honors
Junior: 4.0: 6 AP, 1 Honors
I also received a 5 on all the AP tests I have took.
Junior year I decided that I have to hit my SATS out of the park to have some chance in the college admissions process and that’s what I did. So I studied like crazy for my standardized tests. I received a 1590 on my SAT. I received a 800 on my math2, 800 on my bio E, and a 800 on my history Sat2s.
My recommendations will be very good because all my teacher liked me very much and have called “The best student they had in a long time”. Also, don’t worry about my ecs because they are pretty good.
So, bearing this in mind, do I have a chance for any of these colleges.
Rutgers
Pitt
Purdue
Cornell(ed)
UCLA
UCB
UVA
NYU
UMICH
Dartmouth
Thank you guys! Please try to be honest as you can be without utterly roasting me.
Well without even hearing about your ECs, I can tell you purely based on your SAT alone that you’re a virtual lock for Rutgers, Pitt, and likely Purdue. The others are up in the air, again depending on your ECs. But that test score alone will make you competitive for almost anywhere.
I agree with the commenter above that your SAT score alone is very impressive and will likely get you into Rutgers and Pitt despite your low GPA. Without knowing your ECs it’s very hard to predict your chances for the more elite schools like UCLA, UCB, NYU, Cornell, and Dartmouth. UCLA and UCB tend to be more academics-heavy rather than focusing on ECs strength, so your chances don’t look too great there, but if you tell us in more detail about your ECs we may be able to help you out! Good luck! I would appreciate it if you could chance me back here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1995754-chance-me-low-gpa-rank-cornell-rice-wash-u-ucla-etc-p1.html Thanks!
Also important – what did you earn in your individual classes your freshman and sophomore years? Having two D’s or F’s and the rest A’s vs. having all B’s makes a huge difference. The other comments provide good “chances”, but you will be able to get some more help if you provide your ECs in more detail.
Further, what is your intended major? What race are you? Do you need aid?
As for some of the higher schools on your list, my thoughts are that it comes down to your EC’s. Dartmouth and Cornell are likely out of reach. You must keep in mind that it would simply be unfair for a school like one of these to accept someone who managed to smash the SAT but didn’t try for two years of high school – that is unless you have remarkable EC’s.
