Chance me

Ok, I know the season is over but I just need to know what to expect from colleges where I applied. And it might be helpful for future students like me as I applied everywhere without any help from agencies and etc(for internationals it is a big deal, you know), neither of my parents studied in US ( actually, I don’t have any close relatives who ever did that). I will post all my decisions as they are released.

I am a international female applicant from a very underrepresented country, Azerbaijan, and we don’t have ECs at schools unless you go to private school or a very few specific Lyceums. My school was academically prestigious, but we still didn’t have any ECs(so, all of mine are outside of school). My majors : International affairs(studies, relations), Pol Sci or Art History, indicated all 3 where it was possible.
So, my stats

  1. 1470 sat (690 english). My IELTS test is quite high, above requirements to every school in my list.
  2. I took two subjects Math 2(720, not really high…) and Chemistry(600, I know it is a disaster but I don’t apply to science or engineering, I just took it because I love Chem but english terminology just killed me).
  3. Ok, GPA is complicated. I will note that I had highest GPA in my division(in public schools we can select between two languages which we want primary(both are not English). So, we have 9th grade diploma GPA which is 4.89/5.0( 19 subjects, 17 As and two Bs) and 11th grade diploma which is 4.94/5.0( 18 subjects, 17 As and one B), overall GPA for HS is 4.82/5.0. So, I graduated from my school, but I am currently at US HS(senior), I don’t know exactly how you do GPA here but I have all As in the first semester( one AP class (school offers only one) and one honors class).
  4. My recs should be good, both of teacher really love me.
  5. Essays. I think they were really good, I have quite interesting background. People who read them told me that they are really unique, very personal and showed my personal growth and changes. I have a few WHY essays and they are very specific( one of them is really weird, but it is my fav). I can dm you essays if you are really interested.
  6. So, my ECs are about art(have a few first place in my country, tutoring experience and did some paid work and art projects) and political stimulations( have national, international distinctions in different conferences, also held leadership positions). Also, I was in national dance team and then in flashmob team(during HS)( it is a huge thing in our country, one of my essays is about it). Other things: won a few language competitions (one of them is on national level), and I did a lot of volunteering, 400+ hours. And I am also FLEX finalist( scholarship to study in US high school, each year they select 10-12 students from my country for that scholarship) and I speak 5 languages, but it is common among internationals. It is not very detailed, just general overview. I will post more specific one after getting decisions.
I didn’t have any interviews yet, so any advice will be helpful( first one is in a week).
Oh, and of course, I am applying for aid, a lot of aid…
I know in past a few people from my country got into Ivies and etc , but all of them came from international private schools, so I have nothing to compare myself. (as far as I understood people from private and public schools are in different pools, I might be wrong).

So, here is my list, I had fee waiver from CA, so applied to 20 schools(visited a few, and I really tried to find colleges which I like and might be fit for them, not just picked up whatever I saw, but I considered only schools which offer good amount of fin aid). I know every college is a reach for me as i ask for full-aid, but still where do you think I have most chances?
Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Amherst, UChicago, Middlebury, Colby, Duke, JHU, WUSLT, Beloit, St. Lawrence University, Skidmore, Gettysburg, WUL, Grinnell, Lafayette, Bucknell, Earlham College.

For the interview, I think that you should try to be prepared to answer the question “why do you want to attend this college / university?”. You have a pretty wide range of schools and thus it is hard to know exactly what you are looking for.

Also, it is very hard to predict financial aid. Some schools such as Harvard and Princeton will ignore aid for purposes of admission, and if you get in will meet what they perceive as your need. These are however very difficult schools to get into. Needing significant aid may be your biggest problem at some of the other schools.

I think that your chances are decent that you will get in somewhere with good aid.

@DadTwoGirls Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I know aid will be a huge barrier…

My interview is for Middlebury, if you can suggest anything specific it would be really great!
I did my homework on what they offer and what I really like about them, but still first interview and want to be fully prepared.

Updates : had interview with Middlebury, it was very interesting and was like an hour long. It was casual talk with random questions. My interviewer was mostly interested why Midd apart from academics, like which activities I want to do, what I want to experience and etc.
Next interview is with Princeton.
Any other comments about chances are welcome!

Good luck @interapp

Updates : got rejected from Beloit but in the letter they wrote that rejection is only because of the financial aid and if I can come up with money left after they offer me maximum aid&merit based scholrships, then they will addmit. I wrote an email asking about how much exactly will be left, waiting their reply.

Updates : Beloit replied and with their max aid I will need to come up with 20-25K $ per year, which is impossible for my family.
Good news: got presidential scholarship from Columbia College, which covers whole tuition for 4 years.

Congratulation for Columbia!

Congratulations!!!

@gigichuck Thanks!
Congratulations to you, too!

Very weird updates, but still not bad
Rejected :
Colby, Grinnell, St. Lawrence, WUSTL
Waitlisted:
UChicago

Any tips on how to improve chances of getting out of waitlist?

Wait-list for internationals at need aware colleges often is due to financial need. So odds are they you won’t get off the wait-list.
How much is r/b at Columbia college and can you move into an office campus apartment in the second year to reduce costs?

With Columbia, I can move to an apartment to reduce cost after the first year, that’s exactly what they said. The cost of room and board is quite affordable for my family.

I still hope to get off, they rejected other applicants from my country.
14 more decisions to go, fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed.
Which Columbia college is it (there are several)?

@MYOS1634 It is the one in MO.
Yes, fingers crossed! Still no good news for me, hopefully, next few days and week will have some good news.

We’re rooting for you. And you know you have Columbia college!

Waitlisted or rejected from all of my LACs//
Now only Ivies are left, tomorrow will be a hard day…

It’s really brutal. I’m sorry. Do you have alternatives?
Fingers crossed for today.

Rejected, but excepted
my friend from my country got into Harvard, extremely happy for him and this actually gives a hope for the next year!(the only acceptance from 8 Ivies and second one out of 20).
I think I will take a gap year and polish my resume/application, retake SATs, maybe will try ACT.
I have plan B as college in Europe if this year in East Europe (tho I am leaning towards gap year more),if next year in Germany or Austria( I need to pass exams in German, which I plan to do after returning to my country).
I have acceptance to Columbia College but not sure if it is a good choice for me. I want to get into great graduate school in USA which will be really hard after this college.

How does you going to Columbia College have any bearing in your graduate school?
