With an old score 1390, I think that Honors isn't likely to happen. Despite the fact that they just received a grant to expand the program it is very highly competitive. From past history I believe that for an OOS applicant it's going to take being much closer to 1500 than 1400 to be considered for Honors but I could be wrong here..

As to the Morehead or Robertson, both are extremely competitive and many (in fact most OOS applicants) who don't make it to Finalist stage end up at HYPS and other top schools. Of the last four Morehead nominees from my son's school, two made it to finalist stage and one was a winner, but all the others are now at either Princeton or Yale. The Morehead was created by John Motley Morehead to attract "leaders" who otherwise might not have considered UNC away from other top schools like HPYMS.

In my son's class of 43 winners, 7 had turned down Yale to accept the Morehead. and others turned down H, P and S including a girl who was a double Stanford legacy

The Morehead is based on four tenets;Leadership, Scholarship, Athletic Vigor and "Moral Force of Character." From past experience what I have been able to discern from meeting many Moreheads is that they are looking for passionate, well rounded individuals who care more about others than themselves and who are not looking for self recognition.

Leadership is a slippery slope but the leaders I think they look for are those who earn the respect of others through their actions and do not have to "try" to lead.

They really want people with passion about something and oftentimes they are people who are passionate about everything they do; they aren't "grade grubbers" who are only interested in building resumes but are actually life long learners. You will be hard pressed to identify a Morehead on campus because they don't wear the award as a badge, they don't have tee shirts but rather are very humble. My son had friends for close to four years who never knew he was a Morehead, and he was just like every other Morehead in that regard.

You have read this on other threads but focus on your essays. They are the only way that a selection committee is going to know who the person is behind the numbers, and possibly select your app. to be considered by the Foundation if you are not from a nominating school.

A word of caution about essays though, if you are nominated for the Morehead and are fortunate enough to make it to Finalist stage, do not embellish anything or present yourself as anything other than who you really are, what your interest and passions are etc. The interviewers at Finalist weekend will know more about your application and who they think they are about to meet than you can imagine and they are very good at sniffing out impostors. Be yourself.

In all honesty it's really hard to tell what type of candidate you (or anyone else) would be for either the Morehead or Robertson from looking at a list of stats because neither scholarship is about stats.

With your heavy community service, I think you might be a better fit for the Robertson and since the Robertson also offers an application for consideration your chances of being noticed will increase significantly over those being pulled form the admission pile for Morehead consideration.

In any event, good luck!
