Chance my girl

These are her current stats

Public High School -- top 2 or 3 in Massachusetts -- no class rank (but if I had to guess I'd say she is top 10-15%--the school is full of overachievers)

Weighted GPA 4.2 this year so far, with slight upward trend --her school does NOT weigh the GPA so according to them, she is about a 3.4 or 3.5 -- 100% honors or AP classes

EC's
Varsity math team 3 years -- will be 4
Rotary youth leadership conference
Academic Bowl team 3 years -- will be 4
Worked at local preschool in summer will be 2 years
Teaching assistant at a residential camp (at worcester polytechnic institute) last summer for 2 weeks, focussed on middle school girls who are interested in math and science -- will be 2 years
Girl Scouts -- working on the gold award which is sort of like the equivalent of eagle scout
Plays guitar on her own

She is a volunteer ski instructor for children with disabilities at a mountain 120 miles from our home. She has over 720 hours already in her high school career -- will have close to (or over)1000 hours by graduation. It is a peer to peer program and is a total commitment from November to April. She is a mentor this year and next as well. Huge family commitment as well...so I am hoping that our many sacrifices to get her there will pay off beyond the intrinsic good will. Again, this is community service.

Taking 1 AP and 5 honors junior year (including 1 virtual high school honors class -- environmental science) Next year she will take AP stats, AP calculus AP physics, as well as Anatomy and Physiology and honors English

PSAT -- National Merit Commendation
SAT -- 710 Math, 690 Critical Reading, 740 Writing

Subject test results are pending and we think she will not retake her SAT's.

She wants to study Biomedical Engineering.

This is the current list of schools

WPI -- most likely her safety school (also Dad is alumni)
RPI
Dartmouth (obvious longshot...but we are encouraging her to shoot for it)
Colgate
Northeastern

And maybes:

Carnegie Mellon
Syracuse
RIT
University of Rochester
Clarkson
Lehigh
UPenn
Johns Hopkins

Have I missed any biomedical programs in the northeastern quadrant of the US who may offer her some merit money???

I am so worried after reading the many stories here! Any assistance or advice is greatly appreciated.

WPI - in
RPI - in
Dartmouth- reach probably not
Colgate- high match probably in (though might have good competition amongst her classmates)
Northeastern- in
Carnegie Mellon- low reach but probably in
Syracuse- in
RIT- in
University of Rochester- in
Clarkson- in
Lehigh- low reach, similar to colgate and she would probably get in
UPenn- reach, probably not
Johns Hopkins- reach and it is possible. More likely than Dartmouth and Penn

Dartmouth is unrealistic given rank and scores, especially being from MA, so I might think twice about encouraging it. Colgate seems like a reasonable reach.

Dartmouth isn’t unreasonable with those scores, just a long shot. My brother got in with a 2110.
Rank is more of a problem; is there anything she can do about it? Take a class online?

If anything, I’d say play up any sports involvement that she has, the skiing thing is good. Dartmouth loves outdoorsyness.
When she has an interview, tell her to be REALLY outgoing, Dartmouth people love to brag about being in “the Dartmouth family” and everyone is supersupersuper friendly.

Oh, her biomedical engineering interest is another strong suit that she should play up.

It’s definitely not a guarantee, but don’t give up on her. It doesn’t hurt to try.

WPI - in
RPI - in
Dartmouth- probably not
Colgate- high match probably in (though might have good competition amongst her classmates)
Northeastern- in
Carnegie Mellon- reach
Syracuse- in
RIT- in
University of Rochester- in
Clarkson- in
Lehigh- low reach, similar to colgate and she would probably get in
UPenn- no
Johns Hopkins-no

Her schedule is too weak for dartmouth, penn and hopkins. If the school is as “tough” and full of overachievers like you say, then she passed up on many APs.

Also, 3.5 for this “overachiever” school doesnt seem likely for top 10%. Theres kids who could take all regular and get above that.

University of Rochester is very underrated on these forums. I’d consider it a mid-high match given your stats.

Thanks all! No real surprises in your assessments. I wish you all great luck and success!
