I'm a junior at a carter school that is considered to teah a year or two ahead of the grade level. I'm in the top quarter of my graduating class of 130, but my gpa is a 3.31. I just got my psat back and my score were 520 reading, 570 math, and 570 writing. I excpect that they'll go up befoe I take the sat, as I'm taking a prep course. I'm also taking two AP's this year, and another 3 next year. I already have six college credits and I'm in five extracirriculars. But I'm worried that my low gpa could possibly hinder me. I want to know my chances of getting ino the College of Arts and Sciences?

^ incorrect.

If you can really strive and do well on your standardize test scores, really show dedication in some EC’s, get flawless letters of recs, and write amazing essays you will have a better chance. Because your GPA will set you back, you need to show Cornell why they need you. Study it up, also 33+ ACT scores and 2300+ SAT scores will help your chances. You have a chance, nothing is impossible but as of now your chances are slim to none but you still have some time to make a change in your grades and test scores.

Come on, Tinny don’t give him false hope…
Scoring a 166 on the PSAT does give at least some indication of how he’ll do on the actual SAT, and bringing up his score to even 2000 from there will be incredibly difficult. A 3.31 GPA is pretty abysmal and will ruin his chances for any highly selective school unless this charter he’s talking about is Andover or something like that. Two AP’s by junior year is pretty low too, and the fact that he didn’t bother listing any of his five extracurriculars probably means that there’s no amazing wow factor that can carry his stats.

^ You must have skipped my last sentence.

I’m actually a her. I plan on taking the ACT, SAT, and two subject test. In addition to what I said before, I’ve taken the Johns Hopkins CTY Talent Search, and my guidance counselor believes I’ll get into the National Achievement Program. The EC’s are choir (4 yrs), lead writer for School TV ( 2yrs), volleyball (3 yrs, league champs for 2 yrs), dance team (3 yrs), and student council (1 yr). I’m also applying to NHS and Tri-M. Three of my credits are from Penn State and the other three from UPenn. My school only offers six AP courses, which you aren’t allowed to take until junior year. Every other course I’ve taken is an honors course, and my gpa is weighted. The school I go to is MaST, which was voted as top charter in the country a few years back, and is the best school in the city. I also do volunteer work during the year, and teach basketball VBS and Sundaqy School.

Hey Comet, I’m in the class of 2017, so I’m not completely knowledgeable with chancing but hopefully this will help. When I was a junior last year I scored a pretty measly 157 on the PSAT. However with lots of studying (and switching to the ACT, I HATE the SAT and everything Collegeboard lol) I managed to bring up my scores quite a bit. Your GPA is pretty low, but if your charter school is very competitive that might make up for a little, but not a whole lot, so you have to really focus in on your grades this year. I also only took 2 AP classes my junior year. Be sure to step it up quite a bit senior year though. Try not to overload on the ECs. Quality over quantity.

Arts and Sciences is really competitive, so if you manage to step everything up you will have the best chance by also showing a lot of fit for your intended major.

Hope that is helpful and keep working hard!

I got a 148 on the PSAT and a 1980 on the SAT. You can bring your score up. I got tutoring and it helped. But I am barely at Cornell’s lowest score and my GPA is crap, I have a 3.52. Work on getting straight A’s. Plus the college of arts and sciences has the lowest admit rate among all schools.

Sorry but no chance at all in my opinion unless u absolutely rock the real thing and seriously boost your gpa but even then its doubtful.

Yeah I got a 165 PSAT sophomore and junior year… Got a 31 ACT, but it took a LOT of work

Hey, if you get straight A’s this year, you bump up your gpa to about 3.4-3.5. I took the PSATs frosh year and got around 166. I ended up scoring a 2100+ on my SATs and 33 on my ACTs. You just gotta learn how to take a test and a prep course will do it for you (especially if you’re not disciplined like me lol).

Colleges just really want a good fit. If your grades/scores are abysmal, no matter how amazing a person you are, you won’t be able to handle the upper-level courses. It’s often not a matter of how smart you are, but more of your maturity and dedication. Use your summer to do interesting, unique internships or learn a different language. Become the kid other people look up to, not the other way around.

good luck! :)

Honestly, I’m not really seeing how you could get into Cornell. I scored a 218 on the PSAT in October, and scored a 33 on the ACT I took earlier this year. I have a 3.76 GPA, as well, and I think I’m probably going to get somewhere between 2100-2200 on the SAT I’m taking in a couple of months. Even with my test scores and GPA both being higher than yours, I don’t see any possible way I could get into Cornell. I think we’re going to end up in the same boat, unfortunately. Good luck, though! I’d really like to go to Cornell in a couple of years, too.
