I am a white female and I applied EA selecting Computer Science as my major. I wrote a strong essay, and I am also dyslexic. I discussed my disability in my essay and my guidance counselor wrote about it in my recommendation as well. I know it does not make up for my GPA but I've been told that it can help make me a more competitive applicant. JMU is my absolute number one pick, please help! I will chance back.

I’d say you’ve got a pretty good shot. Your GPA isn’t stellar, but it’s better than mine and I got in, and you’ve also got those advanced classes and ECs.

I’m expecting to here back in a month, I am really nervous! Everything is just getting so competitive. For vaTech ED only 2 people in my class were accepted and they both have over 4.0 gpas. Last year there were so many more. I was just accepted to GMU but I really do not want to go there, it’s a great school and its my number one backup but I’m just really betting on JMU. I brought my GPA up to a 3.63 this semester, but it will not have any effect on my application, unless I get deferred, then they receive my Semester 1 grades when they reevaluate me for regular decision. I’m so nervous! Please comment, what you think. I feel like its just a 50/50 chance of whether I will get in or not.

Also, I read an article on JMUs CS website, and they only have 9 female CS majors in the school. Could this help me, since it’s such a male dominated field? Do they take area of study into serious account?

Also, my schools grading scale is different than all the other schools in my area. They all go by 10 point and at my school and A- starts at 93 and a B- starts at an 84. If my school graded on the 10 point scale I wouldn’t have received any Cs and I would have had 7 more As. This grading scale is written on our transcripts.

I’m planning to major in CS as well and I feel like if you got into GMU you can land JMU. I think your EC can compensate for grades if you’re worried about them.
You are? That’s awesome! I saw your chance thread and I think you have a great shot as well, your SATs are high average, I’m not that familiar with the way your GPA is calculated, but I’m assuming its out of 100 and that you have an A average. I hope we both get in EA, fingers crossed!
You have a great shot at JMU. Your SAT score is a little below their average, but you have a solid GPA and are an in-stater, so you should be fine. I’d say there’s a 50% chance that you’ll get in EA, and if you’re deferred, you’ll have around an 70% chance in the RD pool. Best of Luck
P.S- I based this on the stats/graph from students who applied at my school, but I am an out-of-stater, so it is a little more competitive.
