2 Things:

1.While budget is not a constraint, it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a factor. Think about the big picture (would you rather save 200K that you can use for graduate school)

  1. What are the charactoristics in a college that you think appeals to you the most. Do you want to be in a city? In a college town? Do you want a school that has great sports teams to cheer on? Do you want to study abroad? Do you mind the cold? Do you want to continue to play golf in college (maybe club or walk-on)?

You have some great schools on your list but outside of all Top 25 universities they offer very different experiences. Carving a list of top schools is easy, the trick is to create a list of the best schools for you

You are a good candidate for these high reach schools you listed, and I am quite sure that you will add match schools on your final list. Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business might be of interest to you; ED to UPenn Wharton is a must to (even) get a chance. I suggest that you continue tutoring of underprivileged youth and soccer refereeing in your senior year, to augment your contribution to your local community; cut back on golf and soccer if necessary to allow for more time.

  1. Budget is true. I think I’m counting on UNC to be my “cheap” option, and maybe apply to some safeties that can give me merit aid. I would choose quite a few of the above colleges over UNC, however.

  2. Honestly, I’m still not 100% sure on this part. I love the city feel, but also like the suburbs. Duke and UNC sports culture is one that I really love, but I also love the intellectual vibe of UChicago. I don’t really mind the cold. Study abroad would be nice, but not necessarily a deciding factor. As far as golf goes, I think I’ll retire the clubs during my undergraduate years.

Obviously, UPenn is a hard reach. I was debating ED to Penn, Duke, or UChicago and can’t decide on this. If anyone wants to chime in on this and give their thoughts I’d be grateful!

You are moving in the right direction in thinking about what you like about each school. Depending on how your thought process works, what can be really helpful is to start creating a spreadsheet of potential schools and allow yourself to grow that list to 50 or even 100 schools. Want an intellectual vibe? Look into the LACs? Look into some of the Flagship State U’s that offer an honors college. Want the best of both worlds for location? Look at colleges that are close to but not in a city. Villanova, Haverford, Tufts, Georgetown, Wash U in Stl.

Then think about the things you don’t like. As you go through this process you will find your preferences will start to come to the surface. Hopefully by next year you have a list of 15-20 schools that you are really interested in, including reaches, matches and safety schools.
