Applying to:

UCLA
UC Berkeley
Cornell
UW Madison
Columbia

Thanks for your input guys!

In particular, can you guys evaluate my extracurriculars as that is one part of my app that I’m worried about

UW Madison is a safe match. Your SAT score and GPA are well above average. You will get in here as long as your not a meth dealer or something.

UCLA is a high match/low reach. Your scores are in range.

UC Berkley-Same as UCLA

Cornell is a low reach.
Columbia is a high reach.

Thanks for your input!
It’d be cool to hear some other opinions as well

With your stats you’re almost guaranteed an acceptance letter from UW-Madison, and I agree with Mathcountser for the rest. Personally I’d go with one of your listed UCs or Ivies - weather here in WI can be awful (if that matters).

I would agree 100% with mathcountser. Any score around 2250 is about the same since retakes can vary around 50 points in either direction.
GPA, not good, but not bad.
Your weakest point (very weak by the way) is your EC collection. It lacks a bit of passion and doesn’t reveal any specialties. In my opinion (which may not be correct), but it appears as though you do many things to impress colleges solely for this purpose. Lack of awards/research projects/interns may also harm you.

As a side note: Based on your list of courses/EC’s I can’t see what your passion is. Your school course-set along with your ECs and work experience don’t define you much in any specific field. I wouldn’t be able to guess what your major is, based on the info provided.

Chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/963572-chance-average-asian.html

Your EC’s would probably guarantee you for UW Madison. For the rest it might be a slight detriment. However, good essays can easily counter that.

^Is this really true??..because ECs are gonna be the weakest part of my application but I should be able to write decent essays.

Honestly, I was unsure what major I would be entering my junior year.
However, I’ve decided on engineering as a major, which I think is shown in my schedule for next year (calc BC, ap physics, ap chem)

And dvtran, that’s exactly what I was worried about, I hadn’t really thought about extracurriculars up to this point. I’m thinking of sorta broadcasting public speaking as my passion, since I’ve traveled to Turkey and Berlin for conferences in MUN, and I’ve participated in Toastmasters.

But then, there’s the fact that I’m chief editor of the school newspaper. I’m not really sure what do about my EC’s

Bump! Sorry but I’d really like some more input before I start the application process.

^Is this really true??..because ECs are gonna be the weakest part of my application but I should be able to write decent essays.

I meant specifically for the OP. I think EC’s > Essays because you can’t pay someone else for EC’s but you can pay someone else to write an essay for you.

I can only hope essays are more important.

Apply wherever you want man!

If you want to increase your chances a little more, find some leadership positions because colleges like those. I’d say you should be able to get into UW, and Cornell is definitely possible.

My counselor recommended against me applying to UCs due to their looming budget cuts and apparently the app process is a pain. Just thought I’d pass the info along
