Chance - UCSC

I would post this in the general chances thread but UCSC is my very top choice. :D For those wondering, I'm also applying to UCI, UCR, CSULA, CSUSLO, Penn State, Univ of Illinois @ Urbana Champaign.

In state
Race: Asian
Gender: Male
Income (combined): around 160k
Major: Comp. Sci: Game Design and/or Comp. Sci.
Family Size: 4
Both parents went to college

Grades: I think about 3.45 UW for 10th - 11th with 1 AP and 1 Honors. I had to re-take Math Analysis over the summer and changed grades from D/C to B/B. I also got a D in AP Calc A/B that I am re-taking right now in my senior year. My current course load is AP Calc A/B, AP Environ Sci, AP Gov, AP Lit, Econ, Virtual Business. I have B's in all the AP's and A's in Econ/Virtual Business so hopefully they'll see the big improvement in grades.

EC's that I put on application:
JV Tennis (10th)
V Tennis (11th/12th)
American Youth Soccer Org. Referee
Club Tutor
Won some awards in tech related fields.
Guitar
Secretary of Go Club

Testing:
28 ACT (re-taking dec 8)
1870 SAT I (in one sitting)
710 Math SAT II

Essays: #1 I wrote about reffing and tied it in to my community, etc. For #2 I talked about getting the splits.

I know getting low grades in math when I'm applying to a math-centric major hurts, but hopefully it won't hurt too much :x.

If I get denied/wait-listed I'm planning to appeal on the basis of significant improvement in grades and also awards that I've won after the application due date (2nd place in a state competition, some other stuff).

Thanks!

Anyone? bump

Hello. I do not attend ucsc, but i got accepted to ucsc. It looks like you have good sat score but few AP classes can hurt your chance. Its nice that your grades did improve. I had low sat scores but I had a good gpa and passed few AP exams, and I got accepted. You definetly have a chance for ucsc. Good luck

I can’t quickly remember what classes I took, but I think i took 1/2 H courses sophomore and the 1 ap/honors junior, maybe one during freshman i can’t remember

Like I said you have a chance. I forgot to mention if you failed 2 math courses, it might look bad since you are applying for computer science major. However, you did improve/ or will improve in the 2 math courses so you might have a chance. Also, if those awards are from “big” competition, you might have a good chance. Don’t be disappointed if you get rejected. No one in this forum can guarantee if you will get accepted or not. Good Luck.

I don’t want to make a new thread, but does major impact your chances of admissions? I know it affects getting into the school of engineering but is it possible to get accepted just to the school and transfer into the engineering school later? I remember reading something about that for other schools but I can’t find it for UCSC.

From what I heard, major does impact a little. I am not sure. Yes, it should be possible to get accepted to school and transfer later in the year. However, you need to complete certain requirements to get into the college of engineering.
