Chance?

Sex: F
Hooks: 1st gen
School: In the most richest county in the world with excellent schools (Thomas Jeff. High is in the same county)
Race: Asian

Overall UW GPA: 3.6
Freshman Year GPA: 3.4 UW
I take the most rigorous courses in my school: HN Geo, HN Eng, HN Bio, HN History, Chinese 1
Sophomore Year GPA: 3.09 UW
Again, most rigorous courses: HN Alg2, HN Eng, HN Bio, AP World, Chinese 2
the reason why my GPA was so low this year is because i have a C in AP World which obviously brings me down a ton):
Predictions/Goals:
Junior Year: 3.9 GPA
Physics, Precalc/Tric, AP Lang, AP Psych, HN US History, Chinese 3, Peer Helping
Senior Year: 3.9 GPA
AP Physics, AP Calc, HN Govt, HN Eng/AP Lit??, AP Macro/Micro, AP Chinese, AP Stat

I also have extremely unique and great EC’s (I am a very competitive figure skater who skates about 15 hours a week with a handful of medals from local competitions and I am in the highest level possible (Senior). I am also a dedicated figure skating coach who works about 4 hours a week for children, seniors, and people with mental disabilities. I can ask my boss to write me a good rec, because he really likes me and thinks im an incredibly active instructor).

My family has a history of doing incredibly well on the SAT’s because my dad is very good at helping me and my sibs prepare. My oldest sister who graduated HS with a gpa of 3.3/4 UW gpa and went to VT engineering had a near perfect SAT score, with maybe 50 points off (the 1600 SAT) and my sister who went to TJHSST and went to Columbia got a 2350 on her SAT, so my prediction would be:
2200-2300

I am interested in majoring in business, but to increase my chances, I will first apply as an engineer, since they are looking for females in that department, then switch to international-b if i get accepted!

It’s always difficult to “chance” students who are thinking of applying. I do some work in admissions here and the process is complicated and ultimately somewhat arbitrary. I can say that you have a very good GPA-trajectory (started with a lower GPA and built it up while taking hard classes). That’s always nice to see. Also, it helps if you’re a first-generation college student.

I’d say – and again, no one can really give you a solid answer – that you have a good chance of being accepted to ND. Do well on your SATs, continue to work hard, and make sure your application essays are really thoughtful.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice!

also, one problem with your idea: you need to be pre-approved for business, so if you’re accepted to Engineering, you can switch to college of science or arts and letters, but not the business school. They accept some transfers, but not many(I think around 50 per year from other colleges)

@IliketoFence what about economics? and also is your reasoning behind that because business is one of the toughest majors to get accepted to?

@cowycam7 I will be attending Notre Dame next year planning to major in Engineering. My advice to you is to indicate business as your first choice on your application if you want to pursue business. There is an internal transfer process if you were not pre-approved for business, but it is difficult to get into–so why take the chance? To answer your question, Economics is not in the business school. So, you could switch from Engineering into Economics.

LittlePavs is right: business has become more rigorous to get accepted to. Also, to answer your question, I’m not sure if there are any tangible number online that say which major is more difficult to get accepted to.

@IliketoFence @LittlePavs Thanks guys! so depending on the school (ND, BC, Emory, Umich, Upenn, Berkeley, etc), I will first apply as a major in econ, then try and transfer sophomore year
$-)

but… why? You’re a rather strong student, a 3.6 UW isn’t a death threat for Notre Dame, especially with strong enough test scores and a positive trend, and your EC look solid. I would apply to the business school if your plan is to go into business. The difference between getting accepted into econ and business isn’t going to be huge, and if you get accepted econ you could possibly screw yourself over at a school you like but not taking the major you want.

@IliketoFence I know that at michigan if you apply to business, and you don’t get in, then the adcoms will consider whether your college app looks good enough for LSA(general studies umich), does the same go for ND?

@cowyam7 yes there were many people who did not get into Mendoza but were accepted to the College of Arts and Letters.

yeah, I think that’s pretty standard
