Chances at Boston College

Hi everyone.

I'm going into my senior year and wanted to describe myself to see what you all think my chances of getting into Boston College (and some other schools) are. It's been my top school for a really long time.

Academically:

Freshman year I took 3 honors classes and 2 standard classes and got all As.
Honors Geometry, English, Spanish; Standard Bio, History

Sophomore year I took 5 honors classes and got 3 As and 2 Bs (in History and Chem: both 89).
Honors English (short stories/poetry), Spanish II, Chem, Algebra II, and US History I

Junior year I took 2 AP classes and 3 honors classes. 3 As and 2 Bs (in History and Spanish: 88 and 87).
AP English Lang & Comp, Bio; Honors Spanish III, Pre-Calculus, and US History II

Senior year I am signed up for 3/4 AP classes and 2 honors class. Not sure entirely yet; still trying to work out my schedule. I might as well throw this question out there as well: Is a fourth year of Spanish really necessary if I'm planning to major in a math/science field?
Planning on AP English Lit, AP Psychology, AP Calculus, Honors Physics, Honors Anatomy & Physiology or AP Stats

Weighted, my GPA is a 4.39. I'm 11th in my class of 184 at a competitive public school. (Top 5%).

Standardized Tests:

My combined SAT score is an 1850 (720 math, 600 writing, 530 reading). I know this is low for BC (:[) but I think with enough prep I can break a 2000 by next test date.

I took the Biology SAT II and the Math I SAT II. 690 and 720, respectively.

Extracurricular Activities:

Student Council (all 4 years). National Honor Society. I have been invited to and joined the National Society of High School Scholars (since Sophomore year). I am the secretary of our school's Academic Decathlon team. I have been on the school's varsity track and field team since freshman year. I was in the video club freshman year. I've been in Yearbook since freshman year. I received the bronze and silver medals for my scores on the National Spanish Exam. I am the treasurer of the Student Council Executive Board.

Job Experience:

Summer of 2010 I held 3 community service jobs (2 libraries and helped out at town events). Not paid.

I've been working at a Supermarket for a little over a year now. Planning to stay till I leave for college.

I'm an intern at a local advertising company. I edit marketing and commercial videos. (Pretty sure I'll be getting a very good letter from the VP :). )

I have a little less than 100 hours of community service.

Random Things:
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Religion: Catholic

Essay is about the struggle my great grandparents went through on their journey from Italy to the US and how problems outside of the US are so much greater than we can imagine. Which inspired me to help other people, leading me to start a lollipop fundraiser to help the victims of the tsunami in Japan.

My mom is an alumni at BC.

Other schools I'm applying to:
Boston University
Northeastern
WPI
Assumption
Holy Cross
Bentley University

All comments, thoughts, suggestions, etc. are appreciated very much! :D

It’s a reach because of your sat score. I recommend you get it at least over 2100 to be safe. Also, your other test scores aren’t very strong either.

Other than that, your GPA and ECs look good.

Agree with intheair. Excellent chances at Assumption. If you can raise your cr up somewhat I think you would have better chances at BU, Northeastern and Bentley. I would also check into Fordham, Providence and Villanova (need to get around 2000 for better chances). Best of luck!

I would definitely up the SAT and SAT II scores. I agree with poi.
Your GPA and ec’s sound really great!!
BC-reach
BU-match/high match
Northeastern-low reach
WPI-don’t know sorry!
Assumption-match
Holy Cross-low reach (i think…? don’t know too much…)
Bentley-low reach/high match

Everything seems fine except your sat score, the average SAT score for the class of 2015 was 2200 so getting your SAT score up is recommended. But dont be too reliant on your sat score because I somehow got in with a 1540/2400 sat score so anything is possible!

Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts. I figured mostly everyone would have the same response (low SAT). Well I have 3 and a half months to raise my score by about 200 points! Hopefully with enough prep (last time I had none), I can do it! Anyone have any study suggestions? I just bought an official Collegeboard review book and that’s my only plan so far.

Take as many practice tests as you can. Study “Direct Hits” for vocab. Consult Silverturtle’s guide on the CC SAT forum. Good luck!

Re: post #5
The middle 50% was 1910-2125. So the average score could not have been 2200.

Thanks again for the help everyone! I also got my AP scores today. 5 on both bio and comp! I know it’s not significant at all but hey, it can’t hurt :D

Not possible, or was that a typo? The mean score at BC is just over 2000; 2200 is over the 75th %. But yes, a <600 CR WILL be noticed, and not in a good way. :)

Perhaps try the ACT? With a 5 on Comp and 700 on M, you should be able to score well on the ACT.
