I've been looking at Columbia GS and I've been wondering if I had a shot. I didn't go to college after high school. This is not a new story it is the unfortunate tale of every no traditional student. I had to work to support my family in high school. A situation that continues after high school. After I had been out for about 2 years I went to community but ended up having to leave after a year. I'm back I'm community with a 3.0. I have no ECs and no SAT scores. I still maintain a 60 hour work week. Do I have a shot in hell at Columbia GS?

Depending on the number of credits you might want to push your GPA up to or above 3.5… I applied with a 3.53 but it was dragged down from old grades three or four years ago on my transcripts. Over the last year I maintained a 3.8-4.0 each semester. I also took the most challenging classes available to me. Math, science (with a lab), Honors anthro, english, etc. I think the more challenging the courses are the more forgiving they’ll be about a less than perfect GPA. I still think you want to demonstrate that you’ll be successful at Columbia and this is one of a few ways they gauge that. Again, maybe current or former students can provide more accurate information but that’s my take on it.

SAT scores aren’t a big deal. I took the entrance exam offered by GS - it’s actually an SAT exam except you skip the math portion and they add in their own personalized essay with a topic that’s specific to Columbia. Like the normal SAT, each section is timed.

The essay is key as I’m sure you know if you’ve read some of the similar threads on here. With a lower GPA that’s what would swing your decision in the right direction.

Again, I have never been part of admissions or even spent a semester at a four year institution but that would be my take on your question.

Worth a shot but don’t get hopes up
