Chances at Cornell, Duke, Cornell, UNC, UVA, Vandy, Northwestern, Penn

I'm a white male from Westchester, New York. My high school is ranked in the top public high schools, I think in the 600s or 700s. I've basically taken the most rigorous courses with the exception of honors english in 9th and 10th grade. The most APs anybody really takes is 6, which I would have had AP Stat fit in my schedule in 11th grade.

Scores and Grades
• SAT: CR: 720, M: 770 , W: 790 (10)...1420/2210 in March and 1490/2250 in June. My essay in June was a 12, if that matters.
• SAT II: Math II: 700 (retaking tomorrow and hoping for 750+), US History: 710
• ACT: Took but not sending
• GPA: I don't know how to convert my average but its 93.17 UW and 95.46 W (1.05 to honors and AP classes). Freshman year was my worst and sophomore year was my best
• Rank: School doesn't rank but gives out deciles...Top 10%
• 4 on AP U.S. History
• Senior Courses: AP English Literature, AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Spanish Language, Economics

ECs and Awards: (pretty weak)
National Honor Society (11,12)
Science NHS (11,12)
Spanish NHS (11,12)
Military History Club (11,12)
Concert/Marching Band (is it considered an EC?) (9,10,11,12)
Stage Band (11,12)
Young Republicans Club (12, Founding Member and Vice President)
JV Tennis (9,10...team captain in 10th grade)
Varsity Tennis (11,12)
Young Science Achievers Award and Grant (9)
National Latin Exam Level 1 (only year I could take Latin) Gold Medal (10)
National Spanish Exam Level 4: Honorable Mention (11)
Also, I write the police reports (basically write up the crime in town) for the town paper. I've been doing that since the summer going into 9th grade.

My recommendations will probably be decent from my teachers and excellent from my guidance counselor. My common app essay is very good and the supplements should be solid.

Colleges:
Cornell (AEM or Human Ecology probably) ED
Duke ED
UNC EA (OOS)
UVA (OOS)
University of Michigan EA (OOS)
Vanderbilt
University of Southern California
Northwestern WCAS
Tulane EA
University of Delaware

I am not sure which school I want to apply to ED yet. I like Duke a bit more but I figure my chances aren't too great there. Also, my father and both brothers went to Cornell. I guess you can chance ED and RD for those two schools. I don't think I forgot anything. I'd greatly appreciate some chances. Thanks a lot!

bump...oh yeah, i forgot upenn in my list of colleges. My mom went there if that makes a difference

i think legacy will be a significant boost factor..and wat is your GPA?

I'm not sure how to convert like average out of 100 to 4.0 scale. My average out of 100 is 93.17 UW and 95.46 W.

anybody...?

You only get legacy consideration for UPenn if you apply ED. You are certainly a strong candidate for your schools, but coming from Westchester.......well, you know the score. It is tough for kids applying to all the same schools from this area since they can fill their classes with WEstchester kids. You have some safeties in that you are getting some apps in early, so you should be in good shape if you get some early news in December even if you do not get into your ED choice. However, if you have no good early news, it is wise to look at some other school as safeties, though I think you have a good chance of getting into a number of your schools. UD seems like a good safety to me, as does Tulane, but if you don't hear form them early, you need to expand your list.

Alright, thanks alot. I'm not all that interested in UPenn anyway, especially considering nobody gets in from my school. Does legacy count for Cornell regular decision or does it work the same as at Penn?

I don't know how legacy counts at Cornell, but I do know that ED counts at Cornell. I also want to let you know that because HE and AEM are top choices for premeds in NY, it is VERY competitive. Please bear in mind, that your stats are excellent, i truly expect that you will get into a number of your choices. Just understand that you should have safeties at hand, because this year, as last year was, a very competitive year. Five years ago, I would have given you a higher chance but last year was really a tough one even for kids with your stats with those schools that are accepting less than a quarter of their applicants. Do talk to your GC about who was accepted with what from your school to those schools. Many kids had to have applied to them if you are at a top Westchester high school, and they can give you very specific info. It does make a difference if you are from Scarsdale or from White Plains High despite the fact that both are excellent WEstchester high schools.

Yeah, I mean, I'd be really shocked if I didn't get into Delaware, although I guess it's possible. Unfortunately, I'm not from Scarsdale or a school of its caliber (Chappaqua, Bronxville, etc) but it's pretty good. I don't think AEM is geared towards premed students, though. I guess I'll decide on some real safeties too then. Thanks

AEM is part of the school of Agriculture and LIfe sciences and it is rife with high stat premeds. Believe me, I know as a Westchester mom who has gone through this process 3 times and have had 2 kids accepted by Cornell.

anybody else, please?

Just multiply you’re 100 scale by 4. You’d have a 3.75.

^ no lol, you don’t have to make straight 100’s to get a 4.0

for your GPA just find your transcript (or old report cards) and do this:
4(# of A’s)+3(# of B’s)+2(# of C’s)+1(# of D’s)
then divide by the total number of classes you’ve taken. That’s your UW GPA (for my school anyways)

wow I realized this thread is 9 months old.

please if you could chance me for cornell early decision

Your SAT scores look too good for all of these colleges. Why not aim higher?!
