Chances at Emory, Georgetown, Duke ETC.

Alright I'm currently a high school Junior deciding which schools I'm going to apply to and which schools I have a serious chance of getting into. My unweighted GPA is 3.3 and my weighted GPA is a 3.75. I've taken 8 AP classes 3 or higher on all the exams I've taken so far. I'm also in the IB Diploma Program 4 HL's 4 SL's I've received either a 6 or 7 on every exam I've taken so far. My SAT I is not great at 2010 but I'm retaking it Saturday. I have a 710 on the American History subject test a 750 on the Euro one and a 710 on math 1. My EC's are strong. Mock Trial Team Captain (3 years, Captain for 2 also 2 time county champs under me) FED Challenge Team Captain (3 years, Captain for 1, 3rd place nationally), President Growing Leaders of America (3 years, VP 1, President 1), Finance Club President (3 Years, VP 1, President 1), Model UN (3 years), SGA (3 Years) and Club Rugby Team Captain (5 years Captain 1) also an Econ paper I wrote may be getting published and I have over 1000 hours of community service. So I'm wondering if the other things I've done will make up for my low high school GPA. Would I be able to get into schools like Emory, Duke and Georgetown and if not what are some more realistic schools that I should be looking at. Money is not an issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, while the rest of your resume is extremely impressive, your GPA is way too low and your SAT isn’t terrible but it isn’t great for those schools either. Unless you have a major hook, it would be tough to get into any of these schools.

bump bump bumpity bump bump

Yea, your GPA is pretty low. Find some matches/ safeties.

If I could raise my GPA to a 3.5 or a 3.6 through summer and online classes do you think that my chances would be greatly improved or would the extra 2-3% not really make a difference?

You have close to zero chance at Duke. GPA is far too low. Unless that GPA laces you on the top 3 places in your class. Georgetown is a pretty high reach. Not as high as duke, but still very unlikely. You may have a good shot emory of you can increase your sat by at less 100 points and show an increase in your GPA.

With your GPA, those schools will be hard, but still apply. An ED application at Duke will give you a bump, and you are impressive in other areas of your application. Definitely look for some matches and safety’s, but Duke/Gtown/Emory are alright as reaches if you know they are reaches.
