Chances At Georgetown?

Really curious to see if I have a realistic shot at admittance. I toured the campus and was very impressed, particularly by the incredible support they have for the Walsh School of Foreign Service, where I intend on applying. I've always been very internationally-minded, and I think Georgetown is the best school for my career interests by far. I have other schools which would provide an adequate education but this is my ideal if possible. I have a passion for world cultures (As you'll see below) and I think this is the best university available for me to apply this passion into a constructive educational and career path.

Planned International Affairs major(Concentration in Economics)
Applying for Early Action(See Below)

SAT/ACT Scores: 1930 first SAT testing, 2000 second. Took ACT once and scored 32 composite (2120 SAT equivalent). I can elaborate on the subsection scores if necessary. Georgetown asks that applicants submit scores from all testing.

SAT Subject Tests: Biology: 700, U.S. History: 640, World History: 620

AP Scores: AP Calculus: 2(Probably not sending that in...) Ap Probability & Statistics: 3 AP Spanish Language: 4 AP Biology: 4

GPA/Extracurriculars: 3.75 GPA(On a 4.25 scale). Can't recall class rank but it's within 20th percentile. QuizBowl varsity member for 3 years, captained team sophomore and junior year. I also hold a 1st Dan(black belt) in Tang Soo Do.

Clubs: Aevidum anti-suicide and depression club; Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society member.

Volunteer Service: Almost all with my church(Not sure if this is a plus). I volunteered for 2 years leading a 3rd and 4th grade boy's youth group. I also spent 2 weeks in Haiti freshman year working with missionaries and orphanages. Sophomore year I spent 2 weeks in Guatemala painting a school and working with pediatric cancer patients. This year I also went on a trip with my church to the Netherlands, Belgium, and England. I'm hesitant to go into depth about this trip because it was very evangelical in nature and I'm afraid it could be frowned upon that we ran a service trip to Western Europe.

Other Travel: Visited Colombia for 3 weeks with family in 2006, and Italy in 2013 with school. Up in the air whether to mention these in the application/interview as well because while they were pleasure-based, I can't imagine SFS would be disappointed to learn of any extra international travel.

Study Abroad: I was awarded a $15,000 scholarship to study abroad in Spain during my senior year of high school. I depart in 3 weeks, and I'll be spending ten months there. I'm really hoping complete fluency in a non-native language (As opposed to just functioning knowledge like the majority of high school students) will stand out on my application.

Because I'll be living in Spain for the next ten months, I'm striving to apply for their Early Decision date in November, to capitalize on my time in the United States. Essay help, interviews, etc. will be more difficult to coordinate while abroad, but not impossible.

Any feedback concerning my potential admittance would be greatly appreciated.

low chance…apply to boston college, UVA, villanova u. These schools are similar to gtown but accept more applicants.

While I thank you for the feedback, your reply was a bit generic. Also, I looked through your other replies and you recommended schools which you’ve either attended or had an interest in. While I appreciate your experience, our academic interests are quite different. As a Pennsylvania resident, I’ve looked into Villanova quite extensively and I can say they don’t have any particular programs I’m looking for.

UVA and BC are quite good… in Georgetown’s league. Villanova is not in that league.

You seem like a very interesting candidate, which is a good thing. Personally, you stood out to me from other posters asking for chances. I think Gtown is still going to be a reach, but you have a chance. Your GPA isn’t too bad and your test scores are okay. Your ACT is much better than your SAT though; either way, none are particularly strong so I would try to raise those if you can before you apply. Maybe try the ACT, because you seem to be better at that? Your study abroad opportunity is also very interesting, and clearly shows your passion for your major/career interest. I think if you can raise your test scores and write amazing essays, you will definitely have a shot. Good luck!

Precisely. Especially with what I want to do. Quality international affairs programs tend to be concentrated around the Washington area(No surprise there). If I’m rejected at Georgetown I can just about guarantee I’ll be attending George Washington. While it’s not nearly as academically rigorous, the specialization in this particular area was a big bonus. Villanova is a tad more generic from what I understand, and they weren’t as globalized as Georgetown or George Washington.

I’m going to try to take the ACT again, but it’s quite complicated. I’ll have to take a train to Madrid to have the test administered, and it’s a fairly arduous process, but I felt much more comfortable with the ACT format. Considering there was a 70 point improvement between SAT testing for me, I can only hope to see the same results for the ACT as well.

Bump, more feedback would be welcomed!

Honestly a 3.75 out of 4.25 is way low for Georgetown and your sat does not make up for it. Id say you should definitely apply, but make sure that you stand out with your essay and extra curriculars

SAT is too low, but your ECs are unique. Perhaps you can bring up the scores to be a solid candidate.

Your EC’s will make you stand out with college admissions. Because of your EC’s and how well they fit your major, you might have a decent chance of getting noticed. I would suggest bringing up your scores by just a little more and doing really well on the essay, but your GPA is pretty low. I’m not sure your chances are too great with your GPA.
