Other stuff:
Graduating a semester early to do an internship and cultural immersion program (informal foreign exchange) in another country
I created a class from scratch and taught it to a class of 20+ of my peers for real credit senior year.

Low GPA:

  1. Neither of my parents went to college and one didnt graduate high school and I went to a middle school that did not do grades, so basically I just had no idea what a good GPA was or how important grades were until I started looking at colleges recently.
  2. I had a 3.7 until junior year when I had a bad year. My single mother lost one of her jobs and I had to work two jobs to help pay for things. Yes, I know many students can balance work and school, but I just couldn’t do it at one point and everything fell apart. This also happened to be the most important year for grades AND the year I decided to challenge myself with ap class  so yeah it does not look good at all and it worries me a lot. I dropped AP bio for second semester solely because it was homework heavy and I didn’t have the time anymore. I also flunked AP Studio second semester because my pieces take around 40-60 hours and I could only finish 12 out of the 24 pieces even though art is something I’m good at (should i submit a supplementary portfolio to make up for the F?). I would write about this but I don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses.
  3. I can not take any AP classes senior year because my school forces everyone to graduate early to travel and do internships, so there is no point in doing one for half the year.

Low Test Scores:

  1. I haven’t really had the time to study because of work
  2. My mom doesn’t want to pay for me to retake the ACT and doesn’t understand why I need to since she didn’t go to college
  3. I’m having trouble finding free resources
  4. I am horribly slow at tests. I scored in the 95th percentile for statewide tests in math, english, reading, and science, that are not timed, but only somewhere in the 80th for the ACT. I mention that to point out that there is a big difference in my testing abilities when I’m timed versus when I’m not and that I know I could do better if I were able to finish more of the test. Basically I don’t think it’s an accurate representation of my abilities because of this and I know that MH is test optional, but also I feel like I need to get a good score to make up for my GPA.

Lack of AP Classes:

  1. We only have 1 AP class at my school and the rest you have to travel to another school to take which is damn near impossible to workout with your schedule. I took as many as I could and most kids at my school take zero to one or maybe two AP classes/

Do I have any chance at all and does MH take a more holistic approach towards students? If not what are some schools like this one that I have a chance in that do?

Also, what are some safety or target schools like this one for me? I live in Ohio.

High reach at best, rejection most likely.

Hi–Mt. H would like to see a higher GPA probably, but it never hurts to try.

Maybe also look at Simmons in Boston. it’s a very nice school (my DD’s second after Mt. H). It’s also part of a consortium and it has supportive academics like Mt. H. Simmons is known for giving merit. You might just qualify.

You may also want to consider Mills in CA. It’s not in a consortium but it allows cross registration at a variety of schools–almost amounting to a consortium. The school is pretty and they recently reduced the tuition. I’ve known people who have attended recently and they have enjoyed their experience.

You may also want to look into –

Russel Sage college near Albany NY
Agnes Scott near Atlanta Georgia
Hollins U in Virginia

Best of luck to you.
