Chances at Northwestern University?

Ok, I just started my junior year of high school. As of now, these are my stats:

4.0 GPA (unweighted)- I come from a rural area that doesn't offer AP classes, but I have taken the most rigorous courses offered as well as some dual credit classes.

Class rank:1/50

My projected ACT score is about 30-32. I have been studying for quite a while before the test- hopefully this will help my scores.

As for extracurriculars, my main three are FFA, Technology Student Association, and National Honor Society. I have held chapter officer positions in these organizations (reporter, vice-president, president, etc...) and might run for state office this year (if I run, I'm very likely to get the position). I am accomplished in FFA, consistently getting first place at local and regional competitions. I have been scoring very well at state as well and hope to get first is year. As for my envolvement in the Technology Student Association, I have been on the 2nd place team at state in a particular competition two years in a row and also hope to take first this year. I volunteer for National Honor Society group events, as well as some volunteer work on my own. I am a freshman mentor at my school.

I have participated in my state's Governor's school program. I also already have laboratory experience at my state university (this is relevant since I plan to go into science) and am currently looking into intern opportunities for next summer.

My recommendations will include an excellent narrative from the professor overseeing my previous lab work (summer 2013), and possibly the mentors I will work with next summer. I also have high school teachers that love me and have written great recommendations before (to get me into Gov School). I was able to read one recommendation and I just about cried because it was so beautiful. I normally can write well, so essays should be no problem. Granted they probably won't be spectacular, but definitely good enough.

I don't have hooks (I'm white). I would have the first generation college thing going for me, but my dad got a two year degree.

Note: I plan to major in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry. My previous research experience is in this field.

I think I have included all the information I can at this point. Even though it isn't much, I would appreciate a rough guess since I'm very nervous right now. I really like this school, but am unsure if I even have a chance. Thanks in advance.

Everything is great except for your projected ACT scores. Aim for a higher ACT score (34-36), and you would have a good shot of getting in. However, it’s obviously no guarantee.

^Agree 100%. Other than your ACT score, you’re a superb candidate for Northwestern! :)

Would applying ED make a difference?

Applying ED does indeed pull some weight, even without ED, I would speculate that you are a competitive candidate! Good luck!

Chance me back?

I left a comment on your chances post. Thank you for your opinion- I’ve heard from a few other people that applying ED makes a difference (demonstrated interest in the school is important to NU). I’ll have to keep that in my when applying next year.

Thanks! And yes, I would like to emphasize that Northwestern takes contact (reaching out to the school and specific personnel) and demonstrated interest VERY seriously. It’s most obviously not a make or break thing, but it does help if you are on the borderline. Just thought I would share! Good luck!

You look like the kind of student any college would love. NU is very competitive, so get practicing those ACTs! Best of luck.

Very impressive. Obviously way too early to tell still. Take the ACT as often as possible and maintain those grades and you will have a great shot.

I realize that it is early still (I’ll be applying next year), but I just want to know if I’m on the right track as of now. I have been studying for quite a while for the ACT (I will take it for the first time this spring!) and hope to do well. Are there any suggestions for other things I should be doing right now? Any other opinions on my chances are appreciated as well since I am very nervous (already, I know). I have found the school of my dreams and I want to do everything right from here on out so I can get in.

I think you’d need a higher ACT score to be a very competitive candidate for Northwestern. Other than that, you seem pretty solid.

Work on your ACT score and essays and i think you have a great shot (low reach/high match) for NW. Good luck!
