Chances at Penn, Georgia Tech, Purdue, UT Austin/ A&M, U-Michigan Ann Arbor, Cornell

Just another chance post lol.
Hey, I'm applying to Penn ED, and all these other schools EA (except Texas and Cornell), as a Comp-Sci major. I really would be happy to go to any one of them, but my eyes are set on Penn.

IB : 42/45
SAT: 2120 (750 M 750 W 620 W 10)
ACT:31 34E, 33M, 28R,29S
SAT Subject Tests: 800 Math II Physics: Awaiting Chemistry: Awaiting

Junior and Senior Year IB Courses: Math HL, Physics HL, Chem HL, English SL, ESS SL, French Ab SL, Theory of Knowledge/EE

Freshman and Sophomore IGCSE: 7 A*, 1B (English)

EC's:

-SAAST UPenn engineering camp Computer science. Got an 'A' with college credit CIS110

Academic Awards:
School Scholarship
National Cyber Olympiad

Penn essay with references to summer program.
Probably 750 in SAT II Chem and Physics
Not applying for FA anywhere

Country (if international applicant): India
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Indian
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Summer program at Penn (?)
1 other ED app from my school. Probably 20 RD

My Georgia Tech superscore for ACT and SAT combined is 2270 (They consider ACT english as equivalent to critical reading)

Bump

ACT at 25th percentole and SAT below average for UMich CoE. You may consider LSA which also has CS major, however, it would still be a low reach. Reach for CoE.

Is there nothing to lose with an LSA CS Major? Why would they have the same courses in 2 different colleges?

Wait you represented your country in the international math Olympiad? If so, then I would say your chances are definitely high at Penn ED

I didn’t represent my country. I was just a participant from my school for the math olympiad exam :/

@awoodenbowl sorry for the misunderstanding, but the way you listed it under the EC list was really confusing for me as I interpreted as the national representation team. In that case, you should just list “Math Olympiad” instead of International Math Olympiad as that refers to the most prestigious competition in the world that gets its participants into HYPS. I’m guessing UPenn=reach to high reach (Indians have high stats=competitive pool), Cornell= reach, U Michigan as a low reach/reach, UT Austin as high match.

Thanks @blu5959‌. An organization called the SOF in India organizes the “International Math Olympiad” and the other two olympiads listed haha. But, what about for the rest of the colleges in the title? Also, do the Penn Summer program and the Penn Calculus and Computer science online courses do nothing for me? I genuinely liked them lol

I don’t know about the rest sorry, can’t comment on what I am not familiar with. Penn summer and online courses will probably have little effect on your admission results anyway, since they are not selective

@awoodenbowl For Computer Science major alone, there is not much difference between LSA and CoE. There are differences in other LSA and CoE requirement though (e.g. AP credits, language requirement, etc).

Got 800 in Physics and 760 in Chem, if that matters

Penn and Cornell will definitely be long shots when looking just at your scores, but your ECs and other stuff are solid. Keep in mind that schools are not need-blind when looking at international applicants so since you can afford full tuition that is very enticing to these schools.

You can definitely get in to A&M, Purdue, and GT
Michigan and UT-Austin are not guarantees but seem very likely with your ECs.

PENN- reach
Cornell- reach
Gatech/Umich/UT AUSTIN - MATCH
Purdue- LOW match

bump

Purdue is a safety. Umich Match.

800 in your SAT II’s is great and your SAT score is very good. People on this website overly exagerate things.
I often hear a 2120 is not a good score, cut the c*** guys, a 2120 is 97th percentile.

how hard was it to get the A at Penn SAAST in Comp Sci? My son is going there this summer. Do most of the kids do well?

@nnn12345 Hi! Everybody gets an A in Penn SAAST CompSci. You will have to work extremely hard, but every student (even the bad ones) got an A!

Also, for anybody curious, I got a 33 on the ACT and a 42/42 (4.0) in IB, which I sent to all my RD colleges.

The Verdict:

Accepted: UCSD, Georgia Institute of Technology (Committed and will attend unless I get off the wait lists), UIUC, University of Washington, Seattle, Purdue

Wait listed: Carnegie Mellon University, Brown University, UCLA

Denied:Cornell University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania (ED), University of Michigan, UC Berkeley, UT Austin (lmao??),

Which major did you apply to UIUC? I am just curious as the CS/CE program is super competitive.

Hey @billcsho! I applied for CS but got selected for Mechanical Engineering. Also, I got wait listed at Brown CS, Carnegie Mellon ECE and UCLA CS (7.8% acceptance rate) so I think I was a pretty competitive applicant haha, even for UIUC.
