I'm hoping to Major in English or English Education, intending to become a high school English teacher.I know the teachers writing my reccs really well, and think my essays will be pretty good as well, as writing is my strong point. Can anyone tell me what my chances are at any of the following schools, offer reccomendations, or offer any other help or suggestions in any way? I'd really appreciate it. :)

--Schools:
-The College of New Jersey (instate)
-Rutgers Honors Program
-Ithaca
-Columbia (legacy.. know this isn't happening, but still am applying)
-U Michigan Ann Arbor
-Boston University
-Northeastern University
-U Maryland
-SUNY Stoneybrook
-NYU

Thanks n_n

I think you have great chances at all of them, even Columbia.

Hehe we have a lot in common. White northeastern Jews with (mom i presume?) moms who went to Columbia.

The College of New Jersey (instate) In
-Rutgers Honors Program Dont know H criteria, but in at Rutgers
-Ithaca In
-Columbia (legacy.. know this isn't happening, but still am applying)
Yeah, it's pretty rediculous even with legacy. Not much of a chance unless you applied ED which would be a waste IMO.
-U Michigan Ann Arbor Reach
-Boston University Match
-Northeastern University Match
-U Maryland Reach
-SUNY Stoneybrook Safe Match
-NYU Reach

I think since you want to become an English teacher, TCNJ is a top choice...it's a great school and inexpensive and its roots are in teaching.

TCNJ...match/safety
Rutgers...safety
Rutgers Honors...match/safety
Ithaca...safety
Columbia...reach even with legacy
UMich...match/safety (but more match)
BostonU...safety
Northeastern...safety
UMD...match/safety
SUNYSB...safety
NYU...match

My opinion is you have too many safeties. Your SATs are great, I don't think the math will hurt as much as you might think since the others are so strong...likewise the C in algebra, since you won't be majoring in math or anything math related... otherwise your grades too are great.

If you decide not to major in education I think you'd be viable at schools just below ivy....Vanderbilt, Vassar, Colgate, Tufts, Bucknell, BC, UVa, William and Mary, Barnard, maybe Georgetown etc as matches and reaches. I think your list needs to be "bumped up" in selectivity. Still...for a NJ resident going into education TCNJ is hard to beat.

Your michigan GPA for soph. and junior year is 3.2 and 3.6 respectively....which comes out to a 3.4 overall.

Out of state right? Umich is a reach with a 3.4 out of state....even with your good test scores.

UMich, BU and UMD arent really safeties. BU is a safe match, UMD is probably a match, and UMich is prob. a reach.

-The College of New Jersey (instate)- safety
-Rutgers Honors Program- don't know, Rutgers is safety
-Ithaca- safety
-Columbia- reach
-U Michigan Ann Arbor- slight reach, APPLY EARLY
-Boston University- match
-Northeastern University- safety
-U Maryland- match
-SUNY Stoneybrook- safety
-NYU- slight reach

That C in Algebra II will be a killer, unfortunately. If you really want Columbia, apply ED.

TCNJ - Safety

Rutgers Honors - Safe Match

Columbia - Reach

Michigan - Match

BU - Safe Match

Northeastern - Safety

Maryland - Safe Match (out-of-state)

SUNY Stonybrook - Safety

NYU - Match

Thanks to everyone for the advice. n_n I know that Columbia is way out of my league, but the parents are insisting I "give it a shot" and so I figured it couldn't hurt, as long as I keep my expectations realistic.

2331clk, I know that TCNJ is probably the best-value and possibly best-education I could find for what I want to be; my only hesitancy is that a) it's not part of a college town or anything.. there's nowhere to walk to offcampus, and the campus itself isn't that big, and although it is beautiful, I was hoping for a more college-y type feel. I know that's not a good reason, but it still dissapoints me somwhat. =/ And b) It's really, really close to my house. x_o And a girl needs a little independence.

NYU, BU, and UMichigan were the three that I was most excited about - all three have great college towns (NYC, Boston, Ann Arbor), and so I'm really happy most people think BU and UMich were good matches for me.

chocolateluvr88, did you mean to apply ED to UMich, or just to be sure that I got my application in as soon as possible? And wouldn't that be true for most schools? =/ I have yet to visit Michigan, I'm going in the summer, and so of all of them it's the one I know the least about.

As for NYU - how much of a reach are we talking? I know that it's definitely difficult to get into, but is it an unrealistic hope? And is there anything I can do to improve my chances here?

Thanks again. =)

There is no ED for UMich. Admissions are accepted on a rolling basis, so just apply right away. That's when it's easiest to get in.

Ooh, allright. Right away like November, or right away like September? =/ Because that's insane.

FYI Northeastern is more selective than BU. I'd rate your chances equal at both NEU and BU.

My GC told me that NEU was a "slam dunk" for me, and suggested BU as a match. Both looked really nice, though.

it's not a slam dunk. They are much more selective than BU is. NEU i think is 44%, while BU is 56% (?). Either way, I think youll get into both, but NEU is hardly a safety.

Yeah.. those are the right stats, I just looked xP He's somewhat clueless; mixed up PennState and UPenn with a friend of mine.

Thanks for setting me straight.

Apply to Michigan early as in September. Yes, it's insane, but your chances get lower the longer you wait.

I thought your chances at Northeastern were better than Boston U because, looking at my school's Naviance, it appears as if Northeastern cares more about scores, and Boston U cares more about grades. They are both probably safe matches.

I can't see you not getting into BU or NEU. I don't think NYU is any more than a match for you and yes make sure you apply early to UMich.

Since reading through this forum, I've come to think as Barnard as a possible replacement for Columbia on that list - I know it's unlikely/impossible that I'd get into either, but Barnard's advisor program and smaller structure make it probably the best choice for what I want. Anyone know if this is any different when applying?

Also - anyone know about Fordham? NYC colleges are a definite interest of mine, I love the city.

Barnard is less selective than Columbia but still very selective, I think the most selective of the women's colleges. Still I don't think it's any more than a legitimate match/reach or slight reach for you. A key point...does your Columbia legacy count for Barnard too??

Still say NYU is no more than a match for you, actually I can't imagine you not getting in. Fordham = safety.

beckee,

Assuming you are applying to the Steinhardt School of Education, I honestly think NYU is a good match for you. I've seen people with less admirable stats get in and you are probably in the upper echelon of applicants.
