Chances at UC's, USC, and other selective schools?

I think this is it... thanks for your help :)! If you have any suggestions about things I'll need to improve on or do in the future, please include that. Also there's a few questions throughout the post, so if you have any insight into those, that'd be wonderful!

ALSO, if you have any recommendations for safety school-- TELL ME! The ones listed below are probably either match or reach, so let me know.

School List:
UCLA
UCB
UCSD
UCD
UCI
USC
Pomona
Claremont McKenna
Scripps
Northwestern
Tufts
Emory
Carnegie Mellon
Rice University (ED)

I also really like Columbia, UPenn, and Stanford, but clearly, these are reach (even for people more qualified than I am...). My question: is it still worth applying?

GPA: UW 4.0 (academic)-- only As and A+s

I have received two B's, but in PE my freshman year. The GPA above includes, essentially, A-G courses (5 core classes + my elective, band)

Classes I have taken considered "advanced":
Advanced English (9 and 10)
Advanced History (9)
AP European History (10)
AP Biology (11)
AP Language and Composition (11)
AP US History (11)
Precalculus (11)

Senior prospective schedule:
AP Lit
AP Microeconomics
AP Macroeconomics
AP Gov
AP Calc AB
AP Physics
AP Italian
Adv. Band

Test Scores:
ACT: Composite 34 : M34,E35, S33, R32
SAT II: Bio (M) and Math II-- I'm taking these in May. What scores do you think I'll need?
AP European History (5)
Hoping for either 4s or 5s in AP Bio, Lang, and USH!

Activities: *** denotes leadership position (required election)
1. Italian Club President (9,10,11,12)***
President in 10,11, and 12, cultural activities coordinator in 9

American Cancer Society Club President (9,10,11,12)
President in 11,12
Secretary in 9,10

Which goes hand in hand with...

Event Chair of Relay for Life- essentially, the top position. (elected to lead committee of students for planning our community's Relay for Life which raises approximately $50,000) (10,11,12) ***
This is pretty significant because we raise more money than Stanford, USC, UCLA, etc. Also, this event is typically run by adults, but has been taken over by students in my community.

Volunteer for many many hours at an organization in the urban area near me that houses cancer patients (children)-- I work on the living conditions for these patients and their families by making holiday cards, painting, cleaning, organizing, making the place a nice place for the brave kids! I also tutor the patient's siblings.

Intern at my hospital's cancer center, shadowed oncologist, volunteered, too!

I've played piano for 11 years, numerous awards from my conservatory! Will submit arts supplement

Flute and Piccolo which I play in my school's band (first chair), my region's orchestra (first), my school's musicals, competitions (with some awards), and a flute "choir" of mostly professional flautists

Mental Health Support Group (President and Founder) (11,12)-- founded after personal experience
While this is registered as a club, it is more of a support group for those suffering from depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, etc., or those whose family or friends are suffering from those illnesses. It's a big part of my life and has over 50 members. We meet weekly at various locations and have created an outreach network with a local middle school. We've also organized events at school to raise awareness of mental illness. We also set up weeks throughout the year to help students de-stress. It's all pretty great

Varsity Tennis (9,10,11,12)- Captain as a Senior

Hopefully participating in a research program this summer, whether it be a paid program or research with a professor (I applied, but not so sure I'll get in)

Robotics team member (though, no leadership position) (11,12)-- it was just founded this year

I've been in the band and marching band for every year and as I said above am the section leader and principal flute. Possibly next year's band president, though I don't know yet. (9,10,11,12)

Work experience. I am not sure which to include. Can you advise?
1. Nordstrom Sales Associate (10,11)
2. Tennis Instructor (Summer and School year--9,10,11,12)
3. I teach piano to elementary and middle school students (11,12)

Recommendations: Planning on getting these from my language and english teachers. However, I'm planning on studying biology. Should I also get one from my biology teacher? They should be very good, really. I'm very involved in the classroom and in helping my peers, which they recognize.

Additional info:
Prospective major: Neuroscience/cogsci (really interested in the crossover between science and language comprehension and understanding as well as mental illness and affects of stress-- physical and otherwise-- on the brain)
Prospective minor: depending on which school, either music or Italian

California resident
Income: >100,000
Trilingual
Mom went to USC

Both parents with Bachelor's, Dad has Master's

I took a human biology class at a local community college, receiving an A. I will take a few classes over the summer if I'm not accepted into a research program.

I know Java and learning Bluejay (self-taught). This isn't really a big deal, but I love it!

Will submit music supplement on the piano (Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique Movement 3)

I’ll chance back, if you would like-- just leave your link!

anyone!?

Being a California resident will help you get into all the UC campuses, as will having USC legacy. I would say that UCLA, UC Berkeley, and USC will all be mid-high matches (yes they only accept about 20% of students, but a lot of people with worse specs than you get in). UCSD and UC Davis would also be matches and I think, based on your ACT and GPA, Irvine is a borderline safety.

As for the private schools…

 • All the Claremont campuses (Pomona, CMC, Scripps, Mudd, Pitzer) are all really hard to get into, especially the first two. You definitely seem competitive at all of them however.
 • Northwestern, Rice, and Tufts are probably high match/low reach. Applying ED to Rice will help though (are you applying to HPME or the Rice-Baylor medical program? You seem like a premed)
 • Carnegie Mellon is a match. I think Emory is too, especially if you decide to apply to Oxford College. But even at the main campus you have a good chance.

For Biology and Math II, anything over 760 would be ideal. You have a lot of APs and honors classes so I don’t think you have to worry too much.

My advice for Columbia, Penn and Stanford is to not worry about people being stronger applicants than you. There will always be some kid with better numbers than you, even at the state schools (smart people need safety schools). That being said, you have a very good academic GPA and ACT score so you absolutely should try. The worst thing they can honestly say is no.

Ask yourself this: do you like Penn, Columbia, Stanford or Rice more? You can use your Early Decision on Penn or Columbia or Single-Choice Early Action on Stanford (I think). If you are worried that you may not separate yourself from the competition at these schools, you can increase your chances of getting in that way. Don’t be the person that picks an “easier” college to apply ED and have to live the rest of your life not knowing if you would have gotten into a “better” college (When I say Rice though I thought it was a really nice college and I don’t think anyone should regret going to a school like that, but I digress). If you ED, you have to go so make sure it’s your #1 choice.

Side-Note: I don’t think my application is as strong as yours but I’m still going to try for at least one of the schools you mentioned.

UCs: There’s so many applicants that even highly qualified applicants sometimes don’t get in. So, don’t 100% count on acceptance to UCLA or UCB but I think you are a competitive applicant. Also I don’t know that you need to apply to UCI. Its not as prestigious as the others and I really think you will get into one of the others for sure. Consider UCSB over UCI.
UCLA-Match
UCB-Match
UCSD-Match
UCD-Match/Safety
UCI-Match/Safety

You are a perfect candidate for:
USC-Match
Tufts-Match
Emory-Match
I can’t guarantee admission, but you are exactly what they are looking for.

These are reaches. Its not impossible, but you will be up against other highly qualified applicants.
Pomona
Claremont McKenna
Northwestern
Carnegie Mellon

Rice University (ED): I’m not sure how much ED helps here, but you seem like a good applicant. As far as I know, this school is quite science and math based. Is that what you are interested in? If so make sure you have high SAT IIs and other things to set you apart from other applicants.

I’m not sure about:
Scripps

Other schools to consider:
UPenn - I think its worth a try! Maybe ED?
Georgetown - low reach
UMich - Its a match, ranked equally to Tufts. A very reputable university.
NYU - Match
Boston College - Match
Vanderbilt - Reach, but amazing school. Amazing music program if you want to pursue a dual degree in music and something else. They have an EDII option if your EDI doesn’t work out and you love this school.
UVA/UNC - great schools, super hard to get into from OOS.
Cornell - Reach, but plausible.
WashU in St Louis

@BlueWizard97 thank you for helping me out  Of course I’d love to go to Penn, Columbia, and Stanford, but when it really comes down to it, I know that Rice is where I belong. And I know that it is hard to get into, but I’m going to reach for it, and see what happens. Maybe in some people’s eyes it isn’t as prestigious, but I just absolutely adore everything about the school.

@shk909 The only reason I would want to apply to UCI is because I need a place that is either low match or a safety, and it’s very close to me family. A reason that I like these schools (well, most of them) is because my family lives in the surrounding cities.
Of course, UCLA and UCB admission isn’t guaranteed, but do you think it makes a difference that each year about 25 kids (combined) from my school go to those two schools?

And yes, Pomona, CMC, NW, and CMU… oh boy. I’m just wondering, and maybe it’s futile, but I must know: what could I have done to make these schools not reaches? hahaha…

I want to major in Neuroscience, but I also need some sort of humanity, linguistic, musical aspect on the side, and I think Rice offers a great balance of that (as do the reach school above…). I’m (ambitiously) aiming for a 770+ on Math II and Biology M, so we will see! I also think I’m a pretty good writer, so hopefully my essay will turn out well.

I love UPenn, a lot of family has gone there, so maybe I will apply!
Quick question of Georgetown: I’m not religiously affiliated; is this to my major disadvantage?
UMichigan: maybe, it’s just SOOOO cold :’(
NYU: I don’t like the fact that the school doesn’t really have a CAMPUS… you know?
BC: I will be applying there, for sure!
Vanderbilt: I just did some research, and that seems like an amazing place to be. Thanks for the rec.
UVA/UNC: I haven’t really looked into these, but I will.
Cornell: The only reason I shied away is because I’ve been told that the school is hardcore. I know that the other schools I’m applying to are as well, but I’ve heard especially horrifying stories about this school. Any truth to this?
WUSTL: I love this school, I just think the surrounding city is (kind of) depressing :(. Nonetheless, I will apply just because the school itself is wonderful in all aspects.

I think I have MORE than enough match and reach schools, and I really want to apply to some safety ones in case I don’t get in anywhere. Any recommendations?

Bump

yet another shameless bump

@mlolo98 Michigan is cold but there’s a great culture there. You will also make great contacts. I haven’t heard that about Cornell but I would believe its true-plus, its super cold if thats a concern. Vandy is a great option, they give lots of merit scholarship and aid. Applying ED would help your chances of admission.

Some other schools:
Duke - super reach
University of Richmond - match
Amherst College - reach
Wesleyan - reach
Tufts - match
Rice - reach
Wake Forest - low reach
Swarthmore - reach
Vassar - match
U Miami - low match
George Washington - low match/safety

Just saw your message about safety schools. I think some of the UCs you mentioned earlier would work as safeties.

Other safeties:
Boston University
U Wisconsin Madison
U Washington - Seattle
Northeastern
SMU
Syracuse
American
Indiana - Bloomington
CU Boulder
UC Santa Cruz
U of San Diego
