Chances at University of Maryland

-Applied by the priority date

-Applying undecided to general studies

-SAT: 1550-1600, including math, writing, and critical reading. I know its low but I am a bad test taker. I am a much better student.

-GPA: 3.4/4.0 I go to a private school. There is no grade inflation. My transcript shows an upward trend. Junior year I got a 3.6 first semester and 3.8 second. So I show improvement.

APs: European History, Psychology, Art, and Statistics

-EC: two jobs, one internship, captain of a sport, Teachers assistant, VP of two clubs, Class representative for all four years of HS, and some others, don't remember.

-My first essay is pretty good, while my second is okay, but I messed up on it. I used the same word twice in two sentences and I wrote "Maryland University" instead of "University of Maryland". Big mistake!

-Recommendation are good/average

-Even though I am considered white, I am also really diverse. I wrote about it in my essay. My family comes from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. I was also born in the Middle East. So I hope that helps.

Do I even have a chance??? I am nervous. Maryland is my second choice and I probably wont get into my first choice, so I really hope to get in!

Are you instate? That makes a difference, and you’re more likely to get in if you are a Maryland resident.

From California. Will that really hurt me? I thought they wanted diverse/different people?

FYI, Maryland only looks at CR + M, so the breakdown of the score you mentioned does make a difference. From the Maryland website, “For students admitted to the University of Maryland for the Fall 2013 semester, the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1260 to 1410” - note that range is only the CR + M scores, so it is very likely your SAT score is on the low side for FALL admission. If that is the case, but everything else on your application is strong, you may be offered spring admission which would allow you to take fall classes through the freshman connection, and then fully matriculate in the spring.

The “mistakes” you mentioned in your essays really are not that big, so don’t sweat it! It’s not like you said Michigan University or something of that nature, and repeating a word is honestly not the end of the world.

Being OOS as far as California actually may be helpful, but understand that Maryland is just one of those schools that places a lot of emphasis on stats/numbers.

Best of luck.

If you are accepted, realize that you’ll probably pay the full out-of-state tuition, as you won’t qualify for merit aid. Even if you qualify for financial aid, UMD is notoriously bad and won’t begin to meet “unmet need”. So, you should take a good look at the cost and see if this is realistic for you. For the amount you’ll have to pay (including airfare, etc), it may not be worth it for you. You could probably get into several private universities that may meet more need.

If money is no object, then Mary is right, your SAT score (CR + M) is low for UMD, and getting in will be tough. Good luck, though, and make sure you have a plan B and plan C.

Since you’re from California, they might want forgive your lower GPA and SAT scores, since they strive to be diverse. They make acceptance more difficult or easier depending on where a student is from. However, your test scores and GPA are a bit low, but the fact that they are not inflated while you still took AP classes may be good. I have applied as well, but I don’t remember there being a second essay? I don’t know what you’re talking about in those terms. We only had to write one essay.
