Chances at UVa

Hi, my first post...

So I'm applying early decision to UVa, and I was hoping someone could tell me what my chances are.

My GPA isn't great (3.6), but I've taken almost all available Honors classes at my school and AP History (5 on the test) and AP Spanish 4 (3 on the test). This year I have four more APs. My teacher recs should be pretty good.

I have a 2010 on the SATs but that was last year; I'm retaking them next week. I have a 32 on the ACT. I was a Commended Student for the National Merit thing.

I don't have too many extra-curriculars, but I have my Gold Award in Girl Scouts (I collected 300 lbs of school supplies from local schools and sent them to a township school in South Africa), I'm the editor of my school's yearbook, and I was an exchange student in South Africa for 6 months.

I visited the campus last summer if that helps at all.

Thanks for any help or advice! =)

i think you'll have a really hard time getting in with a 3.6 and a 1350 OOS - although your ACT score is very strong. Does your 3.6 put you in the top 10% or 5% of your class? If not, you'll probably get deferred and waitlisted or rejected. Hopefully you can break 1500 on your next SAT to offset your GPA.

sorry - hope i'm wrong

I'm in the top 15%, but that's unweighted.

Any suggestions for schools that might be better matches? I also looked at William & Mary and Vanderbilt, but those might be reaches too.

not being in the top 10% will make it extremely hard for you to get into uva oos. you might have a better chance at vanderbilt than uva or w&m - remember, OOS students at uva and w&m tend to be towards the high end of the 25-75 spreads, while at vanderbilt you fit in better.

Your numbers are right on par for NYU. But depending on your major possibly not. (i.e. Stern and Tisch are like impossible)

what's OOS?

OOS = out of state..

thanks. =)

"Your numbers are right on par for NYU. But depending on your major possibly not. (i.e. Stern and Tisch are like impossible)"

I see no reason why Stern/Tisch is impossible, his GPA is a little below avg and his ACT is right on level with the average.

......bump!

Vanderbilt and Wake Forest would seem to fit you pretty well. Why so eager to come east?

i have a lot of family on the east coast and i spend at least a month there every year...i've just always liked it.

i don't think i've ever heard of wake forest.
