Chances at Virginia, WM, UNC, Duke, Delaware, Vermont, NYU, Tulane, Vanderbilt... :)

Sex: Male
Race: Hispanic (Puerto Rican) ---> I'm actually the only Hispanic kid in my grade... one of about 3 or 4 Hispanics in the entire school if that matters.
State: New York
Intended Major: History & Buisness
High School Info: One of the best Public High Schools in America. We used to be #11 on the US New Report, but somehow this year we were in the 30s... Every year we send a minimum of 3 kids to Harvard, 2 to Yale... Dozens to Ivys.
Rank: We don't rank, but I'd say top 25%?
Recommendations: Fantastic, one of my strongest points.
1.) English Teacher
2.) Obsolete Currency Dealer I work for.
3.) Curator of Historical Society at Colonial Williamsburg

GPA: 3.3 (Steep upward trend... Freshman year and 8th grade keeping me down)
ACT: 31 -> Taking again. Hoping for 32+
SAT: 2020 (680 CR, 670 M, 670 W) -> Taking again. Hoping for 2100+
SAT II: Literature, Math I, American History (Scores on 29th, expecting 700+ on all)

Student Teacher at IBM Headquarters teaching Science to selected middle school kids.

-Volunteered with my brother (a peace core volunteer) for three weeks during summer of 08 teaching English to people in a poor Costa Rican village. Also did farm work.

-Volunteered with the Student Conservation Association restoring Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. Stayed, camping outside, for three weeks rebuilding the curtilage fence, which is now a permanent exhibit.

Other: I'm also heavily involved with Numismatics (coin & currency collecting). I work for a currency dealer, trusted with tens of thousands of dollars of notes and coins. I also have done several lectures at local coin clubs.

3x recipient of American Numismatic Association Young Numismatist Scholarship. Full ride, including air fare to the ANA Summer Seminar at Colorado College.

Member of two local coin clubs, and have given many lectures on various numismatic subjects at each.

ALUMNI CONNECTION: My brother graduated from Duke last year, and is now going to Business school at Fuqua. Could that help me out at Duke?

Also, could the recommendation I'm getting from the Curator at Colonial Williamsburg help me at William and Mary? William and Mary is in Williamsburg, after all...

What are my odds at:
U Virginia
UNC-CH
College of William and Mary (My first choice, was going to apply ED but couldn't for financial reasons)
Duke
University of Vermont
University of Delaware
Tulane
Vanderbilt
NYU
?

I really appreciate this, and I will chance everyone back who chances me, of course.

you’ve got outstanding ECs and those are definitely going to give you an edge in admissions. the only thing I would work on are your test scores, particularly your SAT. and of course your GPA, but the upward trend is a huge factor and i’d say keep your hopes up.

I think you’ve got a really good shot at all the colleges you’re applying to, and I feel like you’re a shoo-in at NYU. And since Duke will consider you a half-legacy (because of your brother), that’ll up your chances of getting in as well. I can’t say I really know all these colleges that well, but you have a really good shot at the ones who focus more on ECs.

I’m happy to say, with slightly improved test grades, you’ve got a great shot at all your schools!

How long will it be until “chancing” is a verb? Anyway, I know well the schools in VA, and they are both great schools and very competitive. You should send a letter with your application explaining your upwards trend on your GPA. That really matters. Your leadership ECs are fantastic, but I would drop the hackysack thing. Getting into UVa is tough, but you have a great advantage with your Poplar Forest experience. I grew up in CVille and TJ is a god there. Same experience deal on W&M, use those connections. Bring up your SATs a bit and I think you will get into these schools. I am also Hispanic, and I have no idea whether that really matters (except that I love my heritage) for getting into college.

Thanks for the input, Justica.

My older brother got into UVA with only a slightly higher GPA and test scores, I would say that I have more extra curriculars though…

Could anyone else give any input?

I’m also applying to UVA and W&M, which are my second and third choice, respectively.

I think you need to raise your SAT higher, because those schools are very competitive.

It’s good that you’re Hispanic; however, you are out of state.

You have a decent chance.

I say you have a pretty good chance at Duke and NYU i dont really know about the other ones but its good that youre the varsity wrestling captain and your SATs are pretty good…btw thanks for chancing me

No problem. Could anyone else chance me?

Here are my opinions:

U Virginia - High Match
UNC-CH - High Match
College of William and Mary - Match
Duke - Reach
University of Vermont - Low Match
University of Delaware - Low Match
Tulane - Match
Vanderbilt - Reach
NYU - Match

Best of luck!

Thanks for the input. Could anyone else help out?
