Chances, Cornell Myth-busting, the New York Connection, and FAQs

Don’t know about that. Being at the top of your high school class is a very big deal.

I’m assuming we need to bring our own ironing board/iron ?

If you ship a package to your dorm room address, will it be in your room when you move in, or do you have to pick it up somewhere else first? (Assuming it arrives after August 13th.)

is it hard to get into cornell after transferring after a semester? oh and being denied as hs senior?

Depends on which school in Cornell you’re looking at.

tip.
no matter which college, don’t go to cornell u. if want grad school

My parents went through a messy divorce while I was in high school (covered in essay) and my household income is very low

I want to major probably in civil engineering, possibly in computer science. I’m a girl, does that help significantly?

Cornell is my dream school, I’d really appreciate your feedback. thanks

Hi, I’m interested in applying to Cornell’s SHA (I’m not a senior, so I still have some time), but I was wondering how heavily do they look for work experience in the hospitality industry. My entire family is involved in the industry, and that’s what has inspired me to think about applying. I know there is still time to get work experience, but I am just wondering. Thanks!

Congrats to everyone that’s been accepted! Well done!

New to the site here and shooting for Cornell
HS GPA: 2.00-2.5
SAT: 1200something/2400

Community College GPA: 3.2 (currently enrolled in a winter stats course, I think it will go up by .1). All my grades are from B-A except for 1 D+ in Bio.
Extra Curricular: Speech, Drama, and Debate Club (secretary), Student Government (on a few committees), and I work for an Orchestra (stagehand) and Percussion supplier (basically the same).
Letters of Rec. are in the works and my essay is good so far (about growing up performing but eventually gravitating to writing)

I know my chances are slim but I figured

  1. You never know
  2. Follow your dreams? lolidk

I glad to see someone shooting for the stars and staying optimistic throughout the admissions process. I see too many people with 2200-2300 sat scores worrying if they have a chance.
You have a chance of getting into Cornell like everyone else. I hope you get accepted and “follow your dreams”!

Here is my more detailed listing if anyone else wants a look: <a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/1450367-hypothetical-chance-junior.html[/url]”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/1450367-hypothetical-chance-junior.html&lt;/a&gt;

Thanks in advanced guys!

Here’s a myth that I would like busted/proven: Does Cornell really have a “swimming test?”

If so, why? And is it a hard test? When/where do you take it? Feel free to share any personal stories and such about it as well. It really seems like an entertaining topic to me.

a simple google search would answer your questions

[Common</a> Questions - Swim Test - Cornell University](<a href=“http://swimtest.cornell.edu/common.html]Common”>http://swimtest.cornell.edu/common.html)

yes, there is an actual swim test.
what it is: "The test is a 75 yard swim which is three lengths of a 25-yard pool.

You must jump into the deep end feet first, swim the first length on your front, the second on your back, and the third is your choice. You may use any stroke. There is no time limit."
so, i mean, it’s not a hard test if you can…you know, swim

Re: post 146. I think that list is quite old, as it lists WUSTL’s tuition as 28,300. 2011-2012 was $40,950. Ah, for the good old days of less than $30k per year tuition (lol).

What is the swimming test for? Every cornell student have to take it?

curious about the swimming test as well. Transfers have to do it too?

After reading it, I just realized yes we all have to take it and pass it.

Everyone does - I googled it and i’m not sure that the standard stories are accurate. [Cornell</a> Defends Swim Test Tradition in Wall Street Journal Article | The Cornell Daily Sun](<a href=“http://cornellsun.com/node/54517]Cornell”>http://cornellsun.com/node/54517) indicates that Cornell officials don’t have documentation on the origin of the requirement. Since other similarly aged universities had a similar requirement, it seems as if it was a PE requirement. I found it amusing that students waited 3+ years and then complained about the requirement…just learn to swim - pretty sure the university actually has swim lessons available.
