Hello!
Cornell, Penn, University of Michigan and Tufts are my top choices and I would really like to know how I might fare in the future. I may do ED for Penn, Cornell, or Tufts.
Stats:
4.39/4.5 gpa
6 AP classes at the end of senior year
A total of 4 A- and 1 B+ in all honors or AP classes (rest are A’s)
ACT: 32 (35 in math 35 in writing -not as good in reading in science)
Will be doing SAT2 in November and sending them straight from testing agency (expected 750+ on Math2 and BiologyM maybe)
Pretty Strong EC: (in my opinion)
Harvard research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (sponsored staff)
Bioengineering club VP and P (Biogen and MIT associated- spoke at conference March 9 2017 Cambridge MA)
Worked with handicapped adults and young adults for 2 summers (300 hours)
Publication article with 5 awards in Biotechnology journal
Selected for Oxford University Trip
French Club Co-president and President (brought attendance back)
French Library creator (maintain for 3 years)
Legislative council (2 years)
Student Council
Raising $500 in grant money for Bioengineering club
Internship with engineering
Science team (3 years)
English Club (four years?)
Basketball (Freshman and AAU)
Lacrosse (JV)
Student mentor
Ski team
Counselor at summer camp
Christmas in the City fundraiser
Thurston Thursday Club
BU Camp (Business classes and econ classes)
From Massachusetts
Ethnicity: White
Bilingual (cause of French EC’s)
Canadian Citizen (if that matters)
I would love someone else’s take
Thanks in advance
Good ECs and GPA but low-ish scores for the ivies. What is your rank at school? If you are in the top 10%, Penn and Cornell would still be tough but not completely out of reach. Doing ED would sure give you a bump.
What is your intended major? Which university on your list is your first choice. You really should not apply ED unless you are set on going there.
Getting into Tufts ED ((38% acceptance rate), statistically speaking, is a little easier than getting into Cornell ED (27% acceptance rate) and Penn ED (23% acceptance rate).
Michigan’s EA acceptance rate is not published, but it is probably in the same range as the RD acceptance rate, which is roughly 25% (a little lower for OOS and international applicants).
Of course, the college you apply to will impact your chances. For example, at Penn, Wharton is slightly harder to get into the CAS or SEAS, while at Cornell and Michigan, Engineering is harder to get into than Arts and Science.
I would be applying to Arts and Science for Penn and Tufts but would actually do Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell since they have my intended major there (Biotechnology). I do see how scores could be an issue but I feel like EC’s make up for some of that but I’m not an expert. @Alexandre@Penn95
My read on this is that you could be accepted and do well at any of these universities. But you will only if you can distinguish yourself by being able to articulate why a school is good for you and why you are good for the school. Your EC list reads like someone who is trying to check all the boxes vs someone who has a deep interest in something - how do these things ties together? Maybe some of them don’t which is ok too. I realize there is more to it than is listed, I see your interest in the sciences, but this is where someone who has borderline stats for these universities will be able to differentiate themselves. Tell your story keeping in mind there are a lot of people with great stats - let your humanity and personality come through. Be authentic. Know why each of these schools is right for you and express that clearly.
Did you take subject tests?
The ECs are good in aggregate, but nothing stands out and they seem scattered. They will be looking for a theme that reflects your interest area at Cornell, Penn and Tufts. Michigan is mostly focused on gpa and test scores.
Hello!
Cornell, I’m deciding if I should apply to Cornell ED. I would love for someone to go over my credentials and tell me what they think about my fit for the school.
My intended major is Biotechnology. Will be applying to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
