Chances for 2014

Hey guys, I'm a junior (well, barely in the summer between junior year and senior year), and I was hoping to get chanced. I'm thinking of applying to (not necessarily applying to all of them though, hahaha) Brown, Columbia, U Penn, Cornell, Emory, Georgetown, Stanford, Brandeis, Duke, NYU, Tufts, U Chicago, and maaaaybe Harvard and Yale.

My (public) school doesn't have AP courses, but I've taken the most rigorous schedule possible, and my GPA is around 3.9-4.0. My school doesn't rank, either, but I'm probably in the top ten or top five out of around 400 students. For the record, I'm in Ontario, Canada, in case that makes any difference, haha.

SATs: 2260
CR 740
M 770
W 750

I plan to take Chem, U.S. History and French SAT Subject Tests in October.

ECs:
- heavily involved in Student Council since Grade 9, elected as rep then, served as independent member this year, President next year
- played French horn in our school band since Grade 9
- founded, edit and write most of school newspaper/writing club
- professional actor out of Toronto

I'm not afraid of the application essay, as I'm a pretty good writer, and I'll have some very good recommendations. I want to apply for political science.

What do you think? Let me know!

You should be a match for Brandeis, Tufts, NYU, Emory.
Georgetown, Duke, Cornell, UChi – definitely in the ballpark, you have a good of a chance as anyone.
Brown, Columbia, Penn, Stanford, H, Y – reaches for anyone. Write some good essays and hope for the best.

Good luck!

Yeah, those are basically the tiers I had knocked out in my head. I’m thinking of really applying to NYU and Tufts as match schools, Cornell and UChi as my low reaches (UChi is my first choice overall), and Columbia as my real reach. But I’m not sure.

welles is right, though certain things to keep in mind.

1) beware of the Tufts syndrome. although you’re by no means overqualified, do make sure to present yourself as someone who’d truly enjoy being at Tufts.

2) whether or not you get into UChicago depends a lot on the type of essays you write. devote some attention to that matter. if UChi is your first choice, make sure that comes out very strong in your essays.

3) cornell isn’t a low reach anymore. cornell is getting tougher and tougher to get into so make sure you pay attention to that.

4) your application essays aren’t really reflections of how good a writer you are (well, that counts but not as much as you think) but how honest you can be with the topics at hand. i’m a writer myself and i know that how good you are at writing has little bearing on the quality of admissions essays. i’m struggling with them myself.

with that, good luck!

Thanks! Any other suggestions/advice/opinions?
