Chances for a little less than AVG student

During my high school career I've suffered from many illnesses and cases where I had to miss weeks of school at a time. Not only do I have a very low immune system, but I have a bone disease which causes me to break bones easily and that kept me out of my sophmore year for about three months. Dealing with all of these factors, it was hard for me to keep up in school--

I have a cumulative GPA of 78.9 so far (is that around a 2.3 on a 4.0 scale?) for my high school career and I'm 186 out of 297 for class ranking. (These are horrible, I know!)

But the one decent thing I have are my SAT scores. If you take the highest sections from both the SATs I took, it is a 640 for Critical Reading, 540 for Math, and 620 for Writing.

For two years I was in the Debate Club through my high school, and two years I was also in Youth Court, an organization that runs through my county helping wannabe-lawyers get more experience.

The (four year) schools I'm currently looking at are (I'm a NY state resident):

-State University at Purchase
-SUNY at Old Westbury
-Barton College (North Carolina)
-University of South Carolina at Aiken
-Campbell University (NC)
-Belmont Abbey College (NC)

Incase I don't get into those, I plan to go to a local community college and then transfer after a year or two. But what do you think are my chances for the colleges above?

Dance-Burn:

Are you applying to any schools close to your home? My sister had a similar high school situation and ultimately decided it was better for her to stay near home (living on campus though) just in case she had a relapse (her main problems were due to improper medications...). If you don't, you may want to have a serious option open to stay near home just in-case you decide it is best for you to stay close to your parents.

With that...as for chances at the aforementioned schools...I really don't know anything about any of them...I'm sorry about that...just giving you a little advice based on family experience...

Yep, I am looking at two four year colleges in my state, and local community colleges (and even one community college a couple hours away in my state that has a campus to give the students the full college experience!) The thing I'm worried about though, is if I stay up north it will be very difficult for me to move around the campus and the city or town during winter because not only do I break bones very easily, but my loose joints cause me to fall very easily. For this reason I wanted to go down south where I wouldn't have to fight the winter weather (which I'd be facing basically a third of each college year!) and I assume the warm weather would help my immune system...

I understand...but do be warned that North Carolina can get chilly in the winter, but not nearly as much so as NY. Winter storms do come less frequently here, but do come sometimes...but some schools you may want to look into not on your list are Guilford College (Burlington, NC) and Greensboro College (Greensboro, NC).

Can't really find the selectivity of Guilford online atm...but Greensboro may be in your reach, you exceed their average SAT and your GPA is still lower than their average (3.2), but not too horribly so, worth a shot at least. Guilford is affiliated with the Quakers and Greensboro has a United Methodist affiliation if that matters to you at all...

How do you feel about Arizona or Florida? I mean you would want warm, dry and easy of walking, not big hills and such. Hey there girlie you can find many schools that will be glad to have 'ya. You'll get suggestions here.

What about UCF in florida?

i'm not sure about chances at suny purchase, but i do have friend that goes there (i think you should apply there anyway). i don't know if you know that it's a reeeeaaaaalllllyyy artsy school and haven't got the greatest vibes from it based on my friend's observations/evidence...

btw, were you thinking to go into law? bc if so, i don't think your major would be a great fit there (they generally have music, english, performing art, etc.)...

Well, I was going to go into an artsy major at Purchase (perhaps Screenwriting cause I'm really interesting in that field) and then go to law school because Pre-law and other types of studies in law is useless when applying to law school.

And Arizona and Florida..those are definite possibilities. I was just thinking of NC and SC because they're only about a day's worth of driving to my family in NY. But I'll definitely look into FL and AZ....Greensboro looks really good too!

Wow, Im sorry to hear about this. Its also interesting seeing you want to go to campbell. My brother went there after living up north his whole live (pittsburgh) and he loved it. He later moved to Raleigh which is a great area as well, and Im planning on going to North Carolina State in Raleigh. If I were you Id really look into campbell. Its definately decent, depending on what you want to go into. It has good pharmacy and bus. admin. programs. You definately have the SAT to get in, but not the GPA.

Im sure schools will take into consideration (at least they should) what youve gone through. I really hope everything works out!

And sorry I couldnt give you much information about other schools, I just feel I can give you some nice insight on campbell since I have a family member that went there.

One last quick suggestion...if you aren't opposed to a historically black college, North Carolina Central may be a good idea as well. It is located in Durham, NC and very close to Duke, UNC, and NCState. Also, if you aren't a under-represented minority (caucasian), you would be one here and may get a boost in admissions (not sure...but can't hurt!). Think about it...
