chances for a panicked person

okay, so i recently decided i was going to definitely go for EDI to Midd. It's been my dream school for a long time, but i realized how difficult it is to get in lately (i read the article in the Times) and so was hesitant to apply early. but, after deciding to settle on another school, i realized that i wouldn't be happy unless i tried. soooo please tell me, realistically, what my chances are:

white, jewish female from suburb of new york
3/480, public high school that sends very very few people to Midd. i think only one person went last year, and they may very well have been the only person to apply! so far, i don't know anyone else applying early from my school.

Senior courses: AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, AP Comp. Gov., AP Spanish, AP English Comp. & Writing

Scores:
SAT - I'm retaking it in November, hopefully the math score will move up!
V-730 W-780 M-650
SAT II's: Biology E (680, 800); U.S. History (800)
AP's: French (5), World History (5), English Lit. (5), US History (5)

Extracurriculars:
--Varisty swimming (9, 10, 11, 12), and I was on the YMCA swimteam in 11th grade, as well
--School newspaper: Editor-in-Chief (12), Associate Editor (11), Opinions Editor (10), Lifestyles Asst. Editor (9)
--I was Co-President of the school's environmental organization last year and an officer in the county-wide student environmental group, and we held an "Earth Night" that raised several hundred dollars for New York Advocates for the Earth
--I'm in the school's choir, select ensemble, school musicals (9, 10), and I participated in the Area All-State Choir in 11th grade and will do so again this year
-- National Honors Society (11, 12)
--Community service: teaching yoga to autistic children, teaching elementary school kids about environmentalism, Midnight Runs, volunteered at academic team meets
-- 10 years of piano, 3 years of voice, recently began studying the violin
-- National Merit Commended Scholar
-- AP Scholar with Honor (or something like that hehe)
-- i tutor kids from the middle school (i get paid, so it's actually technically a job)
-- i take classes at the Alliance Francaise (12th grade)

Summers: i went to Peru in the summer before 10th grade and did community service work there, before 11th grade i went to a french immersion program, and before 12th grade i worked as a counselor at a summer camp

That's it, pretty much. My essays will be strong, and my recommendations should be good, too (fingers crossed). And i have various academic awards, including a Harvard book award but i don't know if that actually stands for anything.

What do you think my chances are if I apply EDI? am i the type of applicant that Midd gets an awful lot of? Please be brutally honest, and thank you so much for reading this!

49 views and no responses??? bump, huge bump.

Admissions are very hard to predict this year as well as last year due to the sheer volume of applicants to the elite schools. Essentially Middlebury has the same status as the four lower Ivies ( Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell and Penn less the upper tier Wharton School). Your profile is outstanding. You certainly deserve to be admitted but, to quote Clint Eastwood's character in Unforgiven, "deserves got nothin to do with it". IMO, which doesn't really count for anything, any student with four 5s in AP exams is well qualified for almost any school in the country. This almost certainly is not what you want to hear, but it will depend upon your application, your recommendations and what Middlebury wants. You certainly are a strong candidate with an impressive profile; I hope you succeed. And, if you don't, then Middlebury loses.

I'd say lock for Midd, apply ED only if you know for sure that no other school in the entire world could satisfy you as much as Midd. Why not apply Regular and give yourself some other options? Your mind may change when you're clutching a handful of fat envelopes. I have a good friend who applied ED to Midd and he regrets it every day, not because he is opposed to being a Midd Kid, but he wishes that he gave himself some more options.

Make sure you know that you really want this.

Midd isn't as selective as Dartmouth, Brown, Columbia, Penn.

You are fantastic but, you are not a lock! Nobody is.See my post on chances of a slow starter below. However you must apply if it is your true love. Just have all of your backups in order well in advance of the application deadline so you aren't filling all of them out and writing multiple essays at the end of December. Good luck.

Dana's Dad

thank you all so much for the feedback! i really appreciate it.
sheldon -- it's funny you say that, because i have a friend who has been reminding me all along that i should be sure about Midd if i apply ED there. the thing is, i was flip-flopping a lot between Midd and Bowdoin, but I've sent in my forms for Midd and everything so it's for sure now. i really want to study arabic, and Midd is one of the only places that offers it! but thanks for the advice, i agree with you completely and hate this whole ED thing because it is way too stressful.

A lock? Absolutely not... you have a solid chance, apply ED if it's your first choice, don't if it isn't. My friend had a 2180 and was a legacy, got rejected. It happens.

I asked about my son's chances on this thread, and I think he has a small chance. Your grades are higher, your SATs are close to his ACTs, your ECs are good, but the kid from our very small rural school who got in last year was our state geography champion and went twice to the Nationals of the Academic Quiz Bowl.

So I think for both you and my son it is the flip of a coin. And it is harder for girls to get in. So I would say if you love Midd, apply ED, but they don't take a greater percentage ED than RD if you look at their stats. Don't ignore your RD essays/supplements.

And good luck!!!

adigal -- has anyone else from your town, other than the Quiz Bowl kid, gotten in? I'm just curious, to know what sort of qualifications other kids who get in are like. Thanks!

years ago. That is it. :( My son visited on Saturday, and wants to apply EDI.

Good grades, challenging classes.

Also seems that your EC's are a perfect match with Midd. First of all, you challenge your self in different areas (liberal arts education, much?) and then you seem to be pretty interested on environmental issue. One of the main factors that distinguish Midd from other liberal arts is its focus on the environment.

Seems to me you have a pretty good chance of getting in (it's hard to tell for sure) and that you would enjoy Midd.
