Chances for Brown, NYU, Villanova and Johns Hopkins (I WILL CHANCE BACK)

What are my chances at Brown, NYU, Villanova and Johns Hopkins

I am currently a junior

GPA: 3.78 UW, 4.27W

Rank: top 5%

SAT: Have not taken, last practice lest was a 2160, aiming for a 2300 in March

SAT IIs: going to take Bio M, Literature and Math II

AP Scores: Taking Bio, Euro, and English Lang

ECs: 150hrs and counting volunteering at local hospital. Volunteering at a hospice for cancer patients. YMCA teen leaders-40 hrs, going to do a research paper and project on Hepatitis B for a local university over the summer.Church Youth Group. Varsity Basketball 3 years. Maybe track this year? Will shadow a doctor over the summer. NHS 2 years. Some other clubs at school nothing extraordinary.

Work experience:YMCA Summer Camp

School Background: Very competitive Public high school yet most kids are slackers... School sends 2-3 (4 accepted) kids to Brown a year, 7 kids were accepted to Cornell last year, 2 to UPenn(15 rejected lol). 15 kids were accepted to Villanova. 11 accepted at NYU. All 3 applicants to Yale and Princeton were rejected last year.

Senior Year Course Load ( next year): Most Rigorous; AP Chem, AP Physics C, AP Lit, AP Macroeconomics, AP Gov, Calc 2 (multi-variable, highest level offered by school)

Planned major: I'm thinking Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Biology or Neuroscience.

Ethnicity: Mixed (White/Indian)

Location: Philadelphia, PA

(Please leave your link to your chance thread so I can return the favor)

Honestly, you have a very good chance for NYU. A match for John Hopkins. I honestly don’t know that much from Villanova (maybe a solid chance). Brown is an ivy and I know ivies enough to say that it could be a low reach. –> The ivies are typically like that :/

Your chances for NYU and Villanova are very high–matches–and you have a very good chance with John Hopkins as well. With your extracurriculars and a very solid SAT score you should have no issue. However, in truth, for Brown, your unweighted GPA is lower than normal; however, this may be balanced by your ECs and a 2300+ SAT score. In truth, it’s a crapshoot; Ivies are a reach for everyone.

I know my GPA is low for an Ivy, I wish more than anything I could go back to 9th or 10th grade and go all out, but oh well. My transcript shows an upward trend. I had 8 Bs in 9th and 10th, but I have all As and A-s now. There have been students that I have read about with stats not unlike my own that have got into Brown. I’m going to put my heart into the Brown essays and interviews and force them to take me lol.

Btw, income bracket is 250,000+. I dont know if that helps. Does not applying for financial aid help your chances, or does that just make you seem like an over-privileged brat?

Good luck with the Ivies; everyone needs them. If you try hard and take some hard classes, it’ll probably impress them, and an upward trend is always good. They probably give some slack to those who bombed freshmen year; however, Brown’s median GPA scores are between 3.9-4.0 unweighted (I also did poorly freshman year).

Damn you freshman year lol!!! Hopefully a 2200-2300 and excellent recs will make up for that GPA. Senior year is going to be rigorous with all those APs, especially chem and physics :0.

How bad is AP Chem in your school? I’m into sciences, and AP Chem is HARD in my school. I got a B last semester. :frowning: If you’re looking for a higher unweighted GPA, AP Chem may not be the way to go.

Why not UPenn, esp. if you’re considering neuro? NYU, Villanova should be a match. JHU tougher. Ivies are always a crapshoot. If you apply to next tier down, you’ll certaintly get a full ride.

AP Chem in my schools is prob the 3rd hardest AP after BC calc and AP Physics C: E/M. My school GPA system is weird, it is calculated by final grades in each class, not term GPA. I’m planning to go through all my chem materials and some text books before I take it. There is only one class running of AP chem at my school. About 7/16 kids have an A in the class. 3 kids have a C but I heard they all got senioritis and slacked off. Most people have an A or a B, but I heard if you study the text book, your almost guaranteed an A on the tests, but most people don’t that’s why its hard.

Historically, student at my school have had a harder time getting into UPenn than Brown. I’ve been to UPenn and I’ve taken a virtual tour at Brown, and heard good things about Brown. I like Brown’s open curriculum and liberal background. How tough is Penn’s SEAS to get into? Is it harder than Browns or easier? If its easier, I might consider. My parents would kill for me to go to Penn, but I don’t really want to.

Your EC’s are great, and your high class rank almost forgives your GPA. I’d say if you maintain A’s for the next two semesters you are a match/low reach for all these schools.

Easier said than done, but it is doable. I really need that 2300 though…

I would say you’re a match for all besides Brown, which is a reach because its an Ivy- but you definitely have a chance, especially if your school has a history of sending kids there. Do well on your sat and it’s looking good. Villanova I would say DEFINITELY to, NYU and Johns Hopkins very likely.

I dont know what I would do if I got into both JHU and Brown, I’d probably flip a coin because they are my two favorite schools.

As previously stated, I think you have a great chance at JHU and NYU, and especially Villanova. Brown, however, is a feasible choice, but don’t get your hopes up; Ivies are wild cards for basically everyone.

i’m pretty sure you can

I would say that NYU and especially Villanova are pretty close to safe. Your EC’s are probably going to make Hopkins pretty close. Brown is probably a little bit of a reach, but there is still a pretty decent chance.

NYU, Villanova and Johns Hopkins shouldn’t be too hard. They are low reaches/to matches I would say. However, Brown is a reach for anyone. You never know what they want. Good luck eitehr way :)

Brown is a high reach.
